I am wallowing in schadenfreude, which I can only hope deepens in the days, weeks, months to come. The person pulling the strings behind Femen is a man named Victor Svyatski and I can only guess at the motivations for his creation of the most obnoxious protest group to hit the world stage in quite a while. So while gullible feminists were being led by the nose thinking Femen was a group of self-starting women who hates TEH PATRIARCHY!!!111 so much that they must bare their breasts to show it, some dude was cackling behind the scenes.
I have set so many Facebook friends on “block posts from this person” due to reposts and support of Femen, despite what I point out to them. It is a shame that it takes this to finally see Femen as the bullshit it is. Not their racism. Not their anti-sex work hysteria. Not their dismissal of transgender women. But that it is being run by a man. There will still be those True Believers™ who will ignore this revelation and think nothing of it. As the article in the Independent highlights, Femen is nothing more than a marketing schtick. But for what? Feminism? I am laughing out loud at that possibility. For all their objection to selling sex, Femen is run on the idea that sex sells. Oy, the hypocrisy!
I wonder if, when Syvatski’s true motivations are brought to light, the Rescue Industry will spring into action? I mean, most members of that group were probably recruited under suspect circumstances and then encouraged to sexually manipulate media attention by bearing their breasts, which also encourages “donations” (how many times do you see that term on escort websites? HA!) to the group? Hell, if consensually selling sex can be construed as trafficking then this sure as shit should be! Quick, someone get Nicholas Kristof! He can live Tweet his struggle to put a t-shirt over a Femen member’s chest during a raid…a t-shirt, I might add, made by one of his former “rescued” women. Wouldn’t that just be the fucking bee’s knees?
