A commenter on the story brought up the fact that this public school double as two churches on the weekend, and despite the violation of separation of Church and State, no one raises a fuss. Of course not! Church is everything that is good and pure in this world, whereas the night club (with fliers featuring voluptuous women, liquor, and money) is teeming with all that vice that no one everyone likes more than Church.
The school district received complaints from parents who wondered why there were empty beer bottles at their child’s school. They also complained about a lingering smell of smoke —
First, yes, the empty beer bottles are a littering concern. Of course, the school needn’t double as a night club for empty beer bottles to be littered on the ground. I’m pretty sure public drinkers (especially those rowdy teens) still use empty school grounds as a gathering place to party. Ditto for the lingering smell of smoke. Though both of these instances, as I stated in my own comment on the story, could easily take place in the teachers’ lounge. Though my elementary school teachers were fantastic, caring, well-educated (about 1/4 of them had Ph.D’s in the field or were professionals they taught), we irritated the hell out of them. So it was less than surprising that some of them would return from lunch smelling of smoke and spirits.
Then, the most ridiculous complaint:
The complaint specifically called attention to the fliers. “All advertisements include the promotion of alcoholic beverages in addition to inappropriate images for school-age children,” Deputy Superintendent Freddie Woodson wrote.
Are the advertisements being passed out during homeroom? No? Then why does that matter? I personally feel images of war and carnage are inappropriate for school-age children, yet their history books are FILLED with them. As usual, this is a problem that is affecting adults, not the children held up as The Reason. Granted, from the fliers (can be seen here on the Miami Herald site, which originally broke the story) it’s not my type of crowd at all. At all. Nonetheless, so long as the club isn’t setting up a bar during recess or roping the children into coming or taking up class time to tell the children to tell their parents to come, then what’s the damn problem?
