The police are becoming our enemy, and society is becoming the enemy of the police. – Frank Serpico
We’re not seeing many Christmas links yet, but since today’s second video (provided by Cathryn Berarovitch) is about a toy, I think it qualifies. The first video, from Deep Geek, is a parody of the trailer for Fifty Shades of Gray; I don’t think one has to be a lesbian to appreciate it, but it might help. Everything above the first video is from Radley Balko, and the links between the videos are from Popehat, Jason Kuznicki, Jillian Keenan and Tushy Galore, in that order.

Well I’m just hunky-dorey this week!
We elected a new DA in Washington and St. Tammany parishes yesterday who is an OUTSIDER and also a former public defender. He’s probably defended as many people as he’s prosecuted.
The Sheriffs of both parishes endorsed a guy who already works for the current DA who’s being forced out for corruption. They outspent the outsider by about two to one and accused him of defending illegal aliens, rapists and murderers.
In the end – parish voters consider all those accusations to be a “feature” rather than a “bug” for the outsider running.
Here’s a sample of how desperate the Sheriffs were to make sure this guy wasn’t elected …

That site reminds me of a troubling trend I’ve noticed over the years; it’s an idea best summed up as “Only the innocent deserve to be defended.” It manifests itself as recriminations against lawyers and law firms who dare to defend “heinous criminals,” particularly if said lawyer later runs for office. There was a similar message in a local race here, where one side was pointing out that the other side’s man once defended child pornographers in a court of law… Nevermind that (AFAIK) they hadn’t actually been convicted at the time. He (the defender) won, though it was incredibly close, and while there were a lot of issues going on in that race, it was close enough that such ads might very well have worked. (As I live in the neighboring state, I don’t particularly care one way or the other.)
The whole situation reminds me of a scene in Blackadder, when Edmund is accused of witchcraft…
Clerk: Who shall defend the accused?
(Lord Percy stands up.)
Clerk: … and thus condemn himself to certain burning at the stake as a partner in Satan if the accused is found guilty?
(Lord Percy sits back down.)
Yeah – but the thing is … voters rejected that. Montgomery was forced into defending against that charge – and he didn’t run from it. He said … “My opponent is accusing me of defending poor people.” And he reminded voters of the 6th amendment to the Constitution and how the system works – and pointed out that it’s juries who decide guilt or innocence – not prosecutors or defendants – at least, that is the way it’s supposed to work.
There is another YouTube video of him saying … “It’s a waste of taxpayer money to incarcerate an innocent man – that, and it’s not fair to the man.”
Hell I know – at the end of the day – he’s just a politician. But he won using his own money and the money of grassroots supporters – because of that, he didn’t have much but his message was pretty powerful. All of the “system” worked overtime to defeat him. Wish I had a link to the video the two Sheriffs of Washington/St Tammany made attacking him. It would make you livid pissed the things they said.
And may that rejection be the start of a trend… but I won’t hold my breath.
Neither will I … but in this day and age I’ve chosen to gloat about even the small shit that goes right! LOL
