The Celtic goddess Brigit, like so many other pagan deities, was turned into a Christian saint; this is a photo I took last July at one of her many shrines in Ireland. This day is sacred to her, and to the flame with which she awakens the world from winter. Sometimes things that seem dead are just waiting for the right conditions to awaken; may all the things that do so in your life be good ones. Blessed Be!

Birgit’s Saint’s Day is often given as 1 February or 2 February. The Celts began a new day at nightfall, around 5pm in Ireland in early February. So their day spanned both 1 and 2 February in modern calendars.
St Birgit is the patron saint of healing. She is also the earliest known Irish abortionist.
In 650 AD a biographer of Brigid, Cogitosus, told the story of a young woman who had broken her vow of chastity and fell pregnant as a result. The young woman went to see Brigid, who took care of the problem:
Brigid, exercising with the most strength of her ineffable faith, blessed her, caused the fetus to disappear without coming to birth, and without pain.
