What more is necessary to make us a happy and prosperous people? Still one thing more … a wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government. – Thomas Jefferson
All my usual news sources were constipated by the election this week; interesting events were still there, but were blocked from emerging into daylight by the huge, malodorous mass that is the American political process. As soon as that filthy mess was done with, the rest started to flow normally again; unfortunately, that meant I had to scramble a bit to compose today’s column and yesterday’s TW3, and that I’ll probably have too many items for next week. Had I wanted to fill this column with boring election stories I could easily have done so, but I deemed only three worthy of inclusion.
This week’s link champ was Jesse Walker of Reason, who supplied everything down to the first video; the video itself, however, is my husband’s contribution. The second video was called to my attention by Walter Olson, and the links between the two arrived via AL 360, Krulac, Michael Whiteacre, my cat, Lenore Skenazy, Korhomme and two from Radley Balko.
- The People’s Bailout.
- Rowdy drunks of the animal kingdom; plus, a skeptical look at same.
- Puerto Rico votes to become the 51st American state; plus, a skeptical look at that story.
- In honor of Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, here are a gallery of rejected concepts for Phantom Menace bathroom toys and a parody video about Leia joining the ranks of Disney princesses.
- Metacensorship?
- The end of UFOlogy?
- Deceased Texas politician wins re-election.
- Cat comes in third in Virginia race for US Senate.
- 3-year-old fined $2500 for attempting to pee in his own yard.
- The British have invaded all but 22 countries in the entire world.
- US court declares military personnel have the right to torture dissidents.
- Georgians vote for Charles Darwin, Batman, Cthulhu, “my neighbor’s cat” and “burning bag of dog shit” over anti-science congressman.
I do use some of these, but Grace uses most of them AND has the accent:
- Psychology, Dungeons & Dragons and monsters’ eyes.
- Celebrity who says vaccines are dangerous also has sex with trees and claims that God talks to her.
- 60-year-old woman arrested and hauled off in handcuffs for speaking too long at a city council meeting.
- Important & powerful essay by Wendy McElroy on how the United States government is like an abusive husband.
I found the first video a bit hard to concentrate on because of the Mermaid. I found myself nervously waiting for each time she’d make an appearance and really didn’t catch what else was happening. She’s got an awesome belly-button. Which begs the question – why are men attracted to little pretty feminine belly buttons? I don’t think many chicks had nice looking belly buttons ten thousand years ago. A nice looking belly button is a work of art the doc that delivers you is responsible for – or the nurse working for him. I went to a poor elementary school (mostly black) where all the kids were born at home (not a hospital) – they all had messed up belly buttons.
Why did I just go there? My mind drifts with any sexual breeze that runs through me. 😛
Anyway … anyone catch how David Petraeus, the CIA director resigned yesterday over an affair? My tin-foil conservative friends all swear to GOD it’s all a plot by Obama and the sith-like “Chicago Machine”. LMFAO!
No matter what you think of Petraeus, it’s still kind of funny that these kinds of “scandals” produce the furor they do, even today in 2012! I think the man I admire most in American History was Thomas Jefferson – a slave owner and a philanderer. A lot of people admire him – he had great ideas about democracy.
LOL – I just wish Americans would wake up and realize that their heros are human beings.
The replacement of religion with politics in the American mind means that they don’t want their politicians just to be “heroes”; they want them to be gods. And nobody wants an idol with feet of clay. This will continue to happen until the cult of politics is recognized as another religion and eschewed by the majority, which will take a minimum of several centuries, possibly a couple of millennia.
BTB, I had to spam another post from “Louie the Lip”, the anti-Semite; this one was a misogynistic rant 1500 words long (i.e. longer than today’s column) comparing women to radioactive waste.
Well, as a former nuke submariner, familiar with both women and radioactive waste – I can affirm there are SOME similarities between the two. For instance, both will be the death of you if you remain within close proximity without proper protective “shielding”.
However, whereas death by “radioactive waste” is a gruesome and painful death … “death by female” is a most beautiful and pleasant one! 😀
Man … there’s more out today on David P’s affair. I thought this was going to be another case of a politician nailing an ugly chick.
Nope – the girls name is PAULA BROADWELL – google it and look for images.
WORTH IT BABY!! TOTALLY WORTH IT!!
I mean shit – David P is now my hero!!
As someone pointed out on Twitter, that’s like a Roger Moore-era Bond girl name.
LMFAO!!
Man – I just cannot get over this – this woman is SMOKIN’ hot. I know now why he resigned – he wanted a way to tell the world … “HELL YA – I HIT THAT!!”
she’s a cutie, but I wouldn’t say she is smokin hot. she looks kinda frumpy in that video.
It really doesn’t take much to get my engine going. 😛

Just proves that men are attracted to women who are bat shit crazy.
I have to agree she looks hot. I think maybe you’re just not used to seeing woman who are in such good physical shape.
Maggie is much sexier.
And not bat-shit crazy. 😉
No? You do realize that BSC is a turn on?
Now you’ve gone and ruined the moment. Back to Walmart for you! 😉
Earlier today, on Twitter: “Glad Petraeus resigned. Only honest, moral men with family values should oversee drone strikes that kill civilians.”
LMFAO!!
” A nice looking belly button is a work of art the doc that delivers you is responsible for – or the nurse working for him.”
Err, no, sorry krulac. The umbilical cicatrix isn’t determined by what the midwife or doctor does or doesn’t do. It’s self determined. African kids often have an associated umbilical hernia, which gives them an everted umbilicus.
I figured you’d comment on that when I wrote it (I was hoping you would too).
Yep – it was the AA kids who had these navals that protruded out from their stomachs – sometimes an inch or more. My mom told me that that was because they were born at home – not a hospital. My dad was also born at home – he didn’t have the problem (then again he’s white).
Now you have shattered my beliefs in many other things my Mother told me. Thank you very much!! I’m going to fold up and go cry in my corner now.
By the way – is there a FIX for this belly button problem that AA kids have? Cuz – now when I play “shirts and skins” with the brothers I don’t notice any of them with the problem. Why the fuck would they have this problem in the first place – are the racial difference so acute that it affects belly button integrity.
My head hurts. 🙁
The protruding navel is an umbilical hernia; we all, as foetuses, had such a hernia. The problem comes when the hernia doesn’t fully close, though I don’t know if there are racial differences determining its frequency. I don’t know of any way to prevent such a hernia; but once established only a small operation will fix it.
I don’t buy the explanation given in the article skeptical of PR voting for statehood. If the protesters didn’t vote or entered a blank ballot, tough shit. They chose not to be heard.

Speaking of D&D, the ancient Egyptians had kick ass looking d20s.
Congratulations, you have just made the first contribution to Links #124! 🙂
Woo!
I want a replica.
Darwin’s non-trivial number of votes not very far away from me makes me wonder: Would it be possible to get some kind of a national campaign going for “None of the Above” and actually win something, somewhere? Doesn’t matter where, I just want to see a political vacancy that can’t be filled because the constituency has stated that everyone going for it is a sack of shit.
I think that if voter turn out is less than 50% the government should shut down and anarchy ensue for a one week period, after which the electorate can determine whether its worthwhile to re-establish a government and determine, from scratch, what roles it should have.
Maggie, have you moved the schedule up a day?
No, just this week. When a holiday I wish to observe falls on a Saturday I move TW3 up to Friday (such as happened for Mabon back in September), but this week I wanted to observe Veterans Day tomorrow so both TW3 and Links moved up. They’ll be back to normal again next week, and for the rest of the year (though you’ll see some topsy-turvy strangeness in January and February).
Wow. You’re the most organized blogger I know. 🙂
You can take the girl out of the library, but you can’t take the librarian out of the girl. You should see my cupboard. 😉
old mother hubbard
went to her cupboard
to get her own daughter a dress
when she got there
the cupboard was bare
and so was her daughter, I guess
hee hee
I like that.
On southern accents, here’s southern comedian Tim Wilson.
HA HA!
I went to YouTube just so I could give this one a thumbs up.
And Tim Wilson as Strother Martin doing a mashup between Stairway to Heaven and Cool Hand Luke.
People’s Bailout
Now THIS is interesting. Even a po’ boy like me might be able to do a little something here.
Drunken Elephants
Like there was any chance that I was going to read about drunken elephants and not post a link to this.
Disney Princess Leah
Well made. Most stuff out there about Disney princesses seem to be written by people who managed to break out of their Barbie obsession for an hour or so, so I’m glad that it was mentioned that some of those princesses got to be heroic in their own right.
Metacensorship
Well, here we go again. Like with Birthers, I wouldn’t have a lot of respect for these guys if they just told the truth, but I’d have a little more than I do now.
UFOlogy
It does seem interesting that we don’t have good solid evidence from somebody’s cell phone camera. And why don’t we have any good cell phone pics of Nessie, eh?
Cat almost elected
Don’t we have enough sex scandals in Washington already? Why are you all looking at me that way? Laura?
Kid takes a leak
Or starts to. A lot of these things would fall flat if they ever went to court. I’m glad the mom is fighting things. If she can insist on a jury, she should.
British Invasion
Notice how the world likes them a lot better now that they don’t have this globe-girdling empire any more?
Torture
Curtis LeMay was right: the only real war crime is to lose.
She-it!
Occasionally I’ll write out the two-syllable version of damn, when something really drops my jaw. DAY-YUM! that was amazing!
D&D
I still remember that awful confrontation between the two beholders: they stared at each other, eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye. Neither blinked and twenty-two people died.
Celebrity is a real tree-hugger
She was rolling on E and rubbed herself against the tree because it felt good. Not that unusual when you’re on that stuff. A favorite activity of people on MDMA is to gently stroke each others’ faces. The stuff about God talking to her, now that sounds a little more LSD-ish than ecstasy-ish, but I’d have to ask people who have actually done it. Wish God had told her that the vaccination/autism link was a hoax.
Don’t we have enough sex scandals in Washington already? Why are you all looking at me that way? Laura?-CatNet is active in Washington DC also…wink.
That would explain a lot of things…
LOL.
