I guess when you gotta go, you gotta go. – Carrie Bilbao
I’m spending a lovely weekend at a mountain lake with Mistress Matisse and a wonderful gentleman, prior to heading for Oklahoma on Monday. So I apologize for the paucity of links this week; I barely had time to think, much less scan the news. Regarding the video (contributed by Franklin Harris): yes, I know what the songwriter meant, but it isn’t like that adjective hasn’t been used in another way since at least the late 19th century, and it strains credulity to believe that absolutely nobody involved in writing, selecting, producing & marketing this turkey had heard of that. And that makes it funny. The links are from Robert King, Radley Balko, Jesse Walker, Radley again and Cassandra Fairbanks, in that order.

Shrikes on pikes? (BTW, a former colleague of mine coined the aphorism usually attributed to Gloria Steinem, “a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle”).
I’ve also heard rumours Richard Bach’s book may be a fairy story.
Hi!
I have been doing sex work for some time now. I started by going to visit a support group for prostitutes that we have here in Finland and talk to some experts (social counselors for sex workers), just to be safe and know what procedures make sex work safer in my home. I am feeling a bit down and lonely now, because in the group I was adviced to always send a message to my friend if I am going to seek for a client in the night clubs or bring someone home. My good and close friend intitally said it was okay, but now suddenly she said she doesn’t want to hear about it, because she disapporves of what I am doing and does not want to participate or in any way support it. I did try to explain to her that I just wanted to add to the level of my safety. The problem is, I have not told of this work to almost anyone, because the friends I have would not understand or accept. Also, the women in the support group are all (but me) not Finnish and have poor panguage skills. They of course do have translators for them in the group. Anyway, I don’t know them or trust them enough to ask them to be a person I can leave a message to. Right now I am feeling I can’t turn to anyone for this small safety measure. I am hurt and feeling let down by my friend. Earlier in life i have told her I hope she feels she can be honest and open with me, because I would rather know what is really going on in her life, not just hear of any facade. Se used to do drugs (not too badly) and I told her she can tell me, no need to hide. How can we otherwise be close friends if we don’t share the real goings-on in our lives, and she agreed.
I feel a bit stupid as well, since I don’t really understand why emailing or texting her about a client would mean she approves what I am choosing to do? I would have thought it would only mean she cares for my safety.
With Love,
K
One method you could use is to fake out the guy you’re with by pretending to call someone and telling them where you are at. That way the guy would think someone else knows about you. It’d be better to actually have someone to call but if not this would make the guy think twice before doing anything wrong. Or maybe you could get to know another sex worker there and then use her as a contact when meeting someone.
Katja, I answered your question in my column for July 30th. 🙂
Fuck that was a relief Maggie.
I had an overwhelming compulsion to say something useful to Katja. Problem is I’ve got nothing useful to say.
According to wikipedia, Tom Wilson Weinberg wrote the song for his album the Gay Name Game in response to a government study of long term monogamous lesbian behaviour in seagulls.
My God! What next?
How long before the authorities allow the NSA to monitor the sexual preferences of pigeons?
That was in 1979. Who knows what they are monitoring now???
If they want to investigate seabirds, boobies seem more interesting. My favorite bird is the Elegant tit: http://www.hbw.com/species/elegant-tit-periparus-elegans
