Attention Artists

Every so often, I’ll pass on a press release I think might be of interest to my readers.  I get press releases nearly every day, but most are just advertising crap from publicity agents; only once in a while is one of them something I think worth promoting.  I got this one a week ago today; it’s for a competition for Southern artists.  If you know an eligible artist, please pass this on.

The Gibbes Museum of Art has announced an extension of the deadline for the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art.

  • $10,000 prize for the winning artist.
  • An artwork by the winning artist will be exhibited in the museum for one full year.
  • The new deadline for submissions is Sept. 7, 2025.

The 1858 Prize is recognized as one of the leading artist competitions in the Southeastern United States, and awards $10,000 each year to an artist whose work contributes to a new understanding of art in the South.  Artists must reside or work in one of these states. Or – they can live elsewhere but be originally from one of these Southern states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

The Prize is presented by Society 1858, the museum’s young professionals auxiliary group. In addition to the monetary award, a work by the winning artist will be exhibited in the museum for a full year.  A jury comprised of arts professionals, representatives of Society 1858, and the previous year’s recipient will select the winner, who will be announced in October of 2025.The museum will also invite the winner to Charleston for the official unveiling of their artwork, part of a three-day celebration in February honoring the artist ‒ including the annual Society 1858 Winter Party, and the Amy P. Coy Forum, where the artist will be invited to speak about their work.

Some of the past winners have gone on to receive major national awards and accolades, including: the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Joan Mitchell Fellowship, the United States Artist Fellowship, and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant.  Some of the winning artists’ works have been acquired in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Gallery of Art, and Art Institute of Chicago, among other institutions.

A Miami [cop named Zamir Vargas Valerio]…is…facing criminal charges…for giving his ex-girlfriend a traffic ticket…when she…was…deployed overseas…by [fraudulent]ly using the computer credentials of a[nother cop.  Not only was]…the victim…out of the country when the [supposed] violation [supposedly] occurred…the [cop] who supposedly issued the ticket was on disability leave at the time…Vargas Valerio is…a…[repeat offender who] was [previously] arrested…on Aug. 23, 2022…[for] domestic violence [because] he [tried to strangle a previous girlfriend]…in front of her son…the case was later dropped…

Panopticon (#898)

There is no “intelligence” in an automated high-resolution scanner:

The Hertz rental car company, along with its Dollar and Thrifty affiliates, are rolling out [computeriz]ed vehicle inspection scanners that scan [a] rental car as it exits or enters the rental lot for damage…But barely two months into the scanners’ initial deployment…there’s already a problem [with the company overcharging customers for scratches & dings barely visible to the human eye]…the…scanners [are built by]…Israeli…company, UVeye….[which] claims its system increases damage detection…by five times…Hertz…touts “transparency” as one of the main advantages its customers can expect from the tech, though it remains to be seen how transparent things remain when customers invariably require a live human to speak with to dispute the findings.  To note, this is the same company that has left a rental desk unmanned for six hours, attempted to charge a customer $10,000 despite an unlimited mileage policy, attempted to charge a Tesla customer for gas, and settled for $168 million after falsely accusing hundreds of customers of stealing its cars—some of which led to innocent people getting arrested, charged with felonies, and jailed…

The Puritan Recrudescence (#1502)

SCOTUS has ruled that the First Amendment does not apply on the internet:

…In the FSC v. Paxton case, [SCOTUS] upheld the very problematic 5th Circuit ruling that age verification online is acceptable under the First Amendment, despite multiple earlier Supreme Court rulings that said the opposite…The practical effect: states can now force websites to collect government IDs from anyone wanting to view adult content, creating a massive chilling effect on protected speech and opening the door to much broader online speech restrictions.  Thomas accomplished this by pulling off some remarkable doctrinal sleight of hand.  He ignored the Court’s own precedents in Ashcroft v. ACLU by pretending online age verification is just like checking ID at a brick-and-mortar store (it’s not), applied a weaker “intermediate scrutiny” standard instead of the “strict scrutiny” that content-based speech restrictions normally require, and—most audaciously—invented an entirely new category of “partially protected” speech that conveniently removes First Amendment protections exactly when the government wants to burden them.  As Justice Kagan’s scathing dissent makes clear, this is constitutional law by result-oriented reasoning, not principled analysis…The real danger here isn’t just Texas’s age verification law—it’s that Thomas has handed every state legislature a roadmap for circumventing the First Amendment online…

To Molest and Rape (ROTW #18)

Good riddance to bad rubbish:

[A typical and representative Washington cop who also worked] as [a] girls basketball coach [in order to stalk prey shot himself after he was caught molesting a victim]…Charles “Rob” Gardiner…[was caught on April 23rd by] the girl’s parents [while he was molesting her] in her bedroom…he fled [after her father tried to physically stop him]…Deputies later found Gardiner dead in his p[igmobile] a few blocks away…the girl was reluctant to share information, but [admitted] she and Gardiner texted regularly, and he had sneaked into her house several times before…The girl’s parents [sensibly became suspicious when] Gardiner…bought her gifts, including an iPad, that they made her return…The iPad was later [found in] Gardiner’s [pigmobile]…the girl’s contact information [was] saved in Gardiner’s phone as “Wifey,” and his phone’s wallpaper [was a nude] photo of her…Gardiner was…[also] a football coach at…a…[nearby] middle school[, but currently does not appear to have molested any kids there]…

The Last Shall Be First (#1531)

This is what Pride should be: a gigantic “fuck you” to authoritarianism:

Around 100,000 people defied a government ban and police orders…to march in what organizers called the largest…Pride event in Hungary’s history in an open rebuke of…Viktor Orbán’s government…which…outlawed [the event] by a law passed in March…The massive size of the march…was seen as a major blow to Orbán’s prestige, as…polls [show] a new opposition force has taken the lead…Orbán and his party have [echoed MAGA] in…[trying to justify their censorship of] Pride…[by absurdly claiming it is] a violation of children’s rights to moral and spiritual development…[trumping] other fundamental rights, including that to peacefully assemble…

Compare this to what Pride celebrations had turned into in the US before Trump ascended the imperial throne and the fascist fair-weather sponsors predictably turned coat.

Pyrrhic Victory (#1541)

The New Orleans city council rewards the NOPD for criminal behavior:

The New Orleans City Council is considering an ordinance that would allow the city’s police department…[to use] the [magic word “]crime[” to justify the]…use [of] real-time facial recognition technology to find and track people as they move about the city…as the[y]…had already been secretly [doing]…via a private surveillance camera network…in…[flagrant] violat[ion of] an earlier city ordinance meant to protect the public’s privacy…the proposed city ordinance would [reward NOPD for violating the previous law by] mak[ing their criminal behavior] legal…the ordinance, as currently written, would allow the police to only “use facial recognition technology while investigating crimes and missing persons cases”…[but since NOPD ignored the previous law there’s no reason to assume this one would be any different], and…these protections could be overturned just as easily as the earlier prohibitions…are about to be…

The Cop Myth (#1542)

Cop deals with problems exactly as he was trained & encouraged to, and everyone is shocked:

[A] Kentucky [cop named]…Bearl D. Ashcraft Jr….[murdered] his girlfriend, Hayley Davidson…[then] killed [himself]…Davidson’s estranged husband, Travis Davidson, says there was…“a lot of domestic violence that was hidden”…Ashcraft tracked her whereabouts using a phone app and others…noticed bruising she tried to cover up with make up [sic]…

Government propaganda inspires the weak-minded to violence:

Amid a surge in vandalism of Humane Borders’ life-saving water barrels in Arizona’s borderlands, volunteers…encountered…an apparent vigilante disguised as a wounded migrant from the Middle East…Kirk Astroth…accompanied by a group of 15 high school students visiting from Colorado, noticed a man crouched in the bushes, dressed in camouflage, with a hoodie covering his head and a black mask on…he…was also wearing “carpet shoes,” which migrants…often use to avoid leaving footprints.  The man waved at the group and [pretend]ed he…[spoke] “Kazak,” the language of Kazakhstan…The volunteers offered him food and water, which he drank as if he were extremely thirsty, and he…seemed to want the group to transport him, which…could have been an attempt to [frame] volunteers [for a] crime.  As the group attempted to leave, the man blocked the mini-school bus transporting the students, and began filming on his phone.  He then returned to the water barrel and opened the spigot to drain it.  Astroth, in a separate vehicle, told the school bus to return to Tucson, and returned to…snap…photos of …a…[nearby] camper van, and its Massachusetts license plate, when the man, no longer in disguise, emerged from the bushes…and ran at Astroth, who…quickly drove away…[and] reported the incident to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department…The dispatcher searched the plates and told Astroth the vehicle owner had a criminal record…

Opting Out (#1306) 

Laws like this always favor big corporations which can afford full-time “compliance” departments:

Dozens of small internet forums have blocked British users or shut down [completely] as new online [censorship] laws come into effect…They range from a hamster owners’ forum [to] a local group for residents of the Oxfordshire town of Charlbury, and a large cycling forum.  The hosts of the lemmy.zip forum, hosted in Finland, blocked users from the UK…saying the measures “pave the way for a UK-controlled version of the ‘great firewall’”…Under the [so-called “]illegal harms duties[” invented by politicians], sites must complete [complex and confusing] risk assessments detailing how they deal with illegal material and…[if they get it wrong,] Ofcom [can] fine [them a staggering] £18 [million] or 10[%] of their…[gross income, but despite this immense liability politicians want website operators to trust bureaucrats’ “]pledge…to prioritise larger sites[“]…

Don’t Call It Trafficking (#1463)

The “troubled teen” industry and its political enablers need to be sued out of existence:

A judge has entered an emergency protective order against former Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin sought by his adopted son, Jonah Bevin, now 18…The order does not include Glenna Bevin, Jonah’s adoptive mother…[even though] Matt and Glenna Bevin…abandoned him in a brutally abusive facility in Jamaica last year and sought to [deport] him to Ethiopia…after he went public [about their abuse]…Jonah…endured several months of severe beatings, death threats, waterboarding and being buried in sand before Jamaican child welfare authorities shut down the Atlantis Leadership Academy in early 2024…[because] the Bevins declined to act on his behalf or return him to the United States…he…ended up in the custody of the Jamaican child welfare system.  It is a [100% predictable] turn of events [for a politician] who campaigned on improving the state’s adoption and foster care system and…adopt[ed] four children from Ethiopia, including Jonah, to…[use as props at] public events along with the couple’s five biological children…

The Cop Myth (#1490)

Why are people shocked when men paid and encouraged to behave violently, behave violently?

Michael McLeod…a [cop] at the University of Mississippi Medical Center[in Jackson], and [his brother] Marquavius McLeod [have been arrested for murder and aggravated assault after]…shooting [eight people at a St. Patrick’s Day parade] on [March 22nd.  Cops thought it was very important to say he wasn’t wearing his magical clown costume when he murdered]…Cortez George…[and wounded] s[even other] victims…

Censorship Ascendant (#1494)

Many useful idiots want this in the US as well:

[UK] police are making more than 30 arrests a day…for sending messages that cause “annoyance”, “inconvenience” or “anxiety” to others via the internet, telephone or mail…[thugs] from 37 [cop shops] made 12,183 arrests in 2023, the equivalent of about 33 per day.  This marks an almost 58 per cent rise…since before the pandemic…Jake Hurfurt…of…Big Brother Watch…said…“Police look to be wasting countless hours on arresting people for posting things online that…are not illegal”…

See No Evil (#1505)

The amount of time, energy, and money flushed down the “culture war” toilet is incalculable:

A new bill introduced in the Texas legislature could fine museums $500,000 per day if they display…art [politicians later decide to tar with the epithet]…”obscene material”…which [can include]…any [work, regardless of] artistic…value[, which includ]es the nudity of individuals under 18…The [political theatrics] over “obscene art” began with [cops barging] into the “Diaries of Home” exhibition at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth…[at a Trumpist judge’s instigation] and steal]ing [four] works by acclaimed artist Sally Mann…from the 1980s and 1990s…[which] centered on her three pre-adolescent children…A jury later [sensibly] declined to take action against the museum [so of course sick-minded politicians are outraged]…

Property of the State (#1506) 

How long will Americans accept cops and prosecutors terrorizing traumatized women?

In late March, police in southern Georgia arrested a 24-year-old woman who had a miscarriage after a [complete stranger saw] her place the fetal remains in a dumpster [and called the cops].  The coroner…determined it was a 19-week fetus from a natural…miscarriage, but…legal experts consider the arrest a bellwether for the criminal suspicion that surrounds pregnancy loss in many states in post-Roe America…In the first year after the Dobbs decision — from June 2022 to June 2023 — there were at least 210 pregnancy-related prosecutions…in [states including] Alabama, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Ohio, Oklahoma, [and] South Carolina…

A Broker in Pillage

Nobody will be safe until this odious, contemptible practice is recognized as unconstitutional:

Hawaii allows prosecutors to [steal]…any property worth less than $100,000 and [any] cars, planes, and boats…96 percent of cases end without ever reaching a judge.  Property owners can demand their day in civil court, but they must file a hefty bond and pay for their own defense…the median currency forfeiture…is around $1,200—far below the amount needed to pay…defense.  Many property owners do the math and walk away.  Others waive their right to a trial and allow the Department of the Attorney General to adjudicate their cases instead, putting property owners in front of state attorneys working on the same side as the police.  Either way, the process is rigged.  Hawaii allows [cops] to prevail with little more than guesswork.  They do not have to specify when or where a crime occurred, who committed the crime, or how…Speculation and innuendo often suffice…

Worse Than I Thought (#911)

Bad ideas for bad laws just keep coming back no matter how many times they are defeated:

Wisconsin [politicians] reintroduced…a…law [to shake down citizens for an extra]…$5,000 surcharge on convictions for [being caught in a]…prostitut[ion sting] or keeping a[n incall]…Similar legislation has previously [failed]…during the 2019-’20 session…

A [Las Vegas] attorney…forced women he represented to perform sexual acts on himself and his friends…Gary Guymon…[has been] charge[d with] sex trafficking, conspiracy to commit murder…and…intimidating a witness…Guymon [was enabled by the state’s]…prostitution c[harges against two of his victims]…and threatened [them] with incarceration…and…physical…violen[ce to coerce obedience]…When [one victim] attempted to get a restraining order against him, Guymon repeatedly threatened her…and…the[n contacted a known]…murder[er] to discuss [hiring him to kill her]…

Monsters (#1255)

Though most of the items appearing under this heading describe violence against trans women, trans men are also targets of horrific violence:

Five people face murder charges after a transgender man…missing [for weeks] was found dead in a field in [New York]…after enduring months of torture…Sam Nordquist…of Oakdale, Minnesota, arrived in New York state in September and was…last in contact with loved ones in late January…Sam, a transgender ma[n]…met a woman named Precious [Arzuaga] online, who convinced him to visit her in New York.  Sam left Minnesota on September 28, 2024, with a round-trip plane ticket, planning to return within two weeks.  However, he never boarded his return flight and was un[der Arzuaga’s psychological]…control…Police launched a missing person investigation…after receiving a welfare check request from Nordquist’s family.  They d[iscover]ed Nordquist had…”endured prolonged physical and psychological abuse” and “repeated acts of violence and torture” between early December and early February…[Arzuaga and other]s sexually assaulted Nordquist with a table leg and broomsticks, and beat him with sticks, dog toys, ropes and belts until he died. His body…was then [dumped in a field]…the…[other] four…[are] Kyle Sage…Patrick Goodwin…Emily Motyka…[and] Jennifer Quijano…

Imaginary Evils (#1347)

Liz Brown on another company the government is trying to destroy with “sex trafficking” myths despite a lack of “sex trafficking” charges:

…Nicole Daedone…founde[r of] OneTaste…and…Rachel Cherwitz, OneTaste’s former head of sales…face a single count of conspiracy to commit forced labor…”between approximately 2004 and 2018.”  Neither woman is charged with actually forcing labor or engaging in other criminal acts.  Their lawyers believe this is the first time the feds have charged forced labor conspiracy without an underlying forced labor charge…prosecutors have…employed dubious theories of criminality, such as “coercive control,” and…have exploited rank sensationalism, as though hoping that throwing in lots of details about kinky sex and free love while suggesting cultish behavior will do where evidence of legal wrongdoing falls short.  Underlying the case is one of the Justice Department’s catchall justifications: stopping sex trafficking and prostitution…the feds clearly intend to imply that this is really a sex trafficking case, even if the charges don’t go that far…

The Last Shall Be First (#1413) 

The time, money, and energy Americans are flushing down the “culture war” toilet is incalculable:

…a[n Iowa] bill…would make it a felony to take a minor to a drag show…This applies whether the performer sings, lip-syncs, dances, reads or “performs for entertainment,” regardless of whether they receive payment…the legislation…[calls for] up to five years in prison and a fine [of up to]…$10,245.  The bill would [also] levy fines of $10,000 per minor against any business that allows a minor to be present at or view a drag show hosted on its premises, and [encourages mob rule lawsuits allowing profiteers to demand]…between $10,000 and $50,000 [from each victim they sue]…

Thought Control (#1509)

Trumpist propaganda dismisses book bans as a “hoax”:

At an elementary school at Fort Campbell, [Kentucky,] home of the 101st Airborne Division, librarians [have been forced to hide]…books that contain references to slavery, the civil rights movement and anything else related to diversity, equity and inclusion…[due to an official] letter “to ensure compliance with executive orders”…Librarians are [order]ed to ensure any such books are “removed from the student section of the [library] and placed in the professional collection”…At Fort Campbell, administrators and librarians are interpreting the [vague order] to apply to…anything that could be perceived to promote one group over another or make one group look bad…[such as] books that mention slavery, the civil rights movement or the treatment of Native Americans…Ironically, some of those history books on civil rights might reference the deployment of the 101st Airborne to Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957 to protect Black students during the desegregation of a high school, a pivotal moment in civil rights history…At another DoDEA school in Europe…libraries are removing books that discuss immigration in a positive light…

The only way to keep data from being misused by state enforcers is not to collect it in the first place:

California [cops] improperly accessed a state database of private information more than 7,000 times in 2023…the EFF discovered…that…[cop shops] reported 7,275 misuses of the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System, or CLETS, to the state Department of Justice in 2023.  The vast majority of those offenses were committed by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department…which was responsible for 6,789 of the violations…Because of the amount of sensitive information on CLETS, there are rules about when and why [cops] can use it, as well as requiring mandatory reporting of abuses…[which] include cops using it to look up information on romantic interests or retaliate against rivals…[an unknown but presumably much larger number of abuses were never caught and therefore went unreported]…

An Ohio judge threw out key evidence in a murder case…because the prosecution improperly relied on facial recognition technology…Blake Story was shot in Cleveland last February, and police used surveillance footage taken six days later to [hang] the killing [on] Qeyeon Tolbert…[by running] the video…[through] a regional fusion center[‘s subscription to] Clearview…[no human identified] Tolbert without…Clearview…[and the cops hid the fact that they used it] in the search warrant affidavit which ultimately allowed them to enter Tolbert’s apartment…[without] probable cause…Clearview includes a disclaimer in its reports warning [cops] that its findings are not “intended or permitted” to be used as admissible evidence…The Cleveland case is [good] news for [victims of] prosecutors around the country [because] police are increasingly using facial recognition…to arrest [people]…without any a[ctu]al evidence…

Torture Chamber (ROTW #13)

The government calls this “justice”; for journalists to parrot that is a choice:

…a…350 pound…[mutant screw named Tyler Grant Lynn was given free reign to terrorize legally-innocent]…teen-aged boys…[by] twist[ing their]…arms over their heads [until they broke].  The snap of one boy’s fracturing left humerus…could be heard by the…microphone on a security camera mounted 40 feet away.  An administrator at the [Kentucky jail] who saw the boy’s arm hanging awkwardly later [yelled “stop faking!” at him]…despite [a politician’s] promises…and…a federal civil rights investigation, [subhuman thugs] continue…to [brutalize young people]…The boys were given ibuprofen…after [reporting] their broken arms…[to] a nurse…[who refused] to examine the[m and instead just yelled “stop faking!” at them]…The boys were [finally] taken to a Paducah hospital three days later…The second boy needed surgery to put metal plates in his arm to repair the damage…

The Vultures Descend (#1493)

Because abortion is protected by the Wyoming constitution, forced-birth fanatics keep framing their attempts as “keeping women safe”:

Two bills that would [make abortion more difficult and odious have] passed [a Wyoming committee]…One would…use the [“admitting privileges” scam to] clos[e] Wyoming’s only [abortion] clinic…the other [uses bogus “environmental” concerns to humiliate women using abortion drugs by forcing them]…to [bleed into a bag marked “BIOHAZARD”]…and return the tissue to their physician for disposal…Wellspring [Health Access] founder Julie Burkhart said…it was “within the realm of possibility” that attorneys representing Wellspring would file a lawsuit against HB 42 if it passes the Senate and is signed by the governor…and…the U.S. Food and Drug Administration did not find any evidence that mifepristone was significantly contaminating waterways more than any other pharmaceutical drug…

A federal judge dismissed a [nuisance] lawsuit against two Las Vegas casino operators that [pretend]ed the companies benefited from the sex trafficking of a minor…an anonymous plaintiff identified as “Tyla D”…[fantasized that Mandalay Bay, the MGM Grand, and The Orleans] casinos essentially turned a blind eye to sex trafficking and [claimed without evidence] that the practice is well-known among employees at the casinos…

Leaving the 20th Century (#1440)

Nearly every article about Belgian decrim is so badly written and so larded with popular myths and prohibitionist nonsense that it’s very difficult to tease the facts out from the ignorance, stupidity, and propaganda.  This article, like most of the others, says nothing about the independent sex work which makes up the majority of the trade and incorrectly implies that every sex worker in Belgium must now be a wage employee, which if true would not be decriminalization.  But instead of hearing about such details from the activists who pushed for these new benefits (including maternity leave, pensions, and personal rights independent sex workers have always had, such as the right to refuse clients), the article instead quotes a prohibitionist so stupid she babbles about “being outside in the freezing weather” when talking about brothels, and so detached from reality she appears to believe other public-facing jobs are 100% free from danger.

A Broker in Pillage (#1465)

Burying government in lawsuits is the only way to slow its depredations:

Indiana prosecutors will return $42,000 in cash they s[tole] from a California small business, several months after the owners filed a class action lawsuit [because] law enforcement is exploiting a major FedEx shipping hub in Indianapolis to s[teal] millions of dollars in cash from innocent owners.  The Institute for Justice…announced…that prosecutors in Marion County…have agreed to return the money to…Henry and Minh Cheng, who [are]…jewelry wholesaler[s]…Police s[tole] the cash from a FedEx package en route to them from a client in Virginia [without even bothering to invent a crime to accuse]…the Chengs…of…[This is a routine practice for] the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office…[even though] the…scheme violates a wide range of constitutional rights, including the Fourth, Eighth, 10th, and 14th Amendments…

The Cop Myth (#1475)

Unsatisfied with merely subjecting people in this country to police violence, the US is now exporting it:

[Wanton] killing is endemic to the extreme brutality of Brazilian police, one of the most violent and militarized police services in the world. The United States government has helped create this crisis.  In 2023, the Military Police in Brazil recorded having killed 6,296 people (approximately 17 people per day)—eight times the U.S. police lethality rate—yet evidence points to the actual number being much higher.  The overwhelming majority of the victims are black, poor, young, male, uneducated, and living in the urban peripheries…nearly a quarter of all violent deaths [in the country are] at the hands of police.  In some cities…that share exceeds 50 percent,..the U.S. [both arms and] shapes Brazil’s hyper-militarized police culture…The U.S. State Department, along with the FBI, has provided various training programs and exercises…[under] both the Trump and Biden administrations…and…[both] the LAPD and the Chicago Police…have…provided riot and protest control training to the Brazilian police, [demonstrating how to meet crowds] with excessive police brutality, including using tear gas and rubber bullets…

To Molest and Rape (#1476)

I must admit to curiosity regarding what all this is about:

[Typical and representative] Kentucky sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines [has been] indicted…[for the murder] of…District Judge Kevin Mullins…on Sept. 19 in an attack caught on surveillance footage…It is still unclear what motivated the [apparently-unbalanced cop and politician] to pull the trigger…the two men had eaten lunch together with a group in the hours before the shooting…When Stines was [arrested], he allegedly told a…[cop], “they’re trying to kidnap my wife and kid”…[judging by remarks made by] Stines’ defense attorney, Jeremy Bartley…he…[plans a “temporary insanity”] defense…


Dangerous Speech (#1494)

Michael Lacey wrote a number of columns before being released on bail because the government doesn’t want to be blamed for his death:

…the morning pill lady…did [not] have the statin pill that has been missing for days.  Two nights [earlier], a guard and a medical tech came to my cell at 10:30 p.m. to give me metoprolol.  Several days before the late night appearance of these angels of mercy, I had collapsed upon the floor and been rushed to Dignity Health Hospital.  There, a doctor took me off the metoprolol, warning me that it contributed to my heart problem…[so] prison staff are making a sincere effort to dose me with metoprolol, which helped trigger the heart attack, but cannot find the prescribed statins which diminish cholesterol, an active agent in unpleasantness…
