I’ve been buying and selling real estate since 1991, and the thing I’ve learned best about it is that I really hate buying and selling real estate. Sunset is the third place I’ve bought to live in, and I also owned a rental property in Oklahoma that I sometimes used as an incall. Well, I sold that one a few weeks ago, or rather I should say I agreed to sell it; two days after it was listed, the agent showed it to a man who immediately made an offer which I accepted…and then the bureaucracy and paperwork began. We finally closed yesterday, giving me enough money to pay off the taxman and some bills and provide a cushion for Grace’s second trip, starting this Thursday. She estimates it will take four altogether, of which the first was the heaviest and most difficult; this next one will include some of our other vehicles, and I’m really rather looking forward to being able to drive my convertible again. But mostly, I’m just looking forward to being done with the move and settled in at Sunset, and only having to drive for a couple of hours to relax in the country instead of having to travel across half a continent.
Diary #372

Oh Maggie your car looks wonderful ! Would love to meet you next year? I’m a tragic when it comes to cars!
It has been on my mind to get a cheap round the world ticket and I enjoy travelling alone! Your an intellect and your zest or should I say exuberance for causes, makes me feel isolated in my little town. Yet we have 1.7 million here and people still call it a country town. My beautiful son travelling to Bristol UK as he has had an offer to manage 12 gyms there! He is personable and beautiful boy and very precious to me. Can I speak privately… In another forum?
Thank you! It’ll be fun to drive her again; I haven’t since I went on my book tour in ’14. For private conversation, email is best (the address we’ve been using is fine). I’m getting ready to head to bed (it’s 3:20 AM here) but I’ll read tomorrow morning!
Looks somewhat like an MG T-series, Morgan 4-4, or 1930s Singer, with major custom mods, too many to list here.
One major WTF: The Mercedes radiator cap ornament.
Except for windscreen angle, could be custom mods on a 1930s Mercedes 540 series.
Whatever it is, it looks like a fun ride.
So what it is? Or is that a trade sekrit?
Nope. It’s a replica of a 1929 Mercedes-Benz. Custom frame, ’73 Mustang engine with (as you say) major custom mods.
Thanks. I could easily believe it’s a replica Mannheim 350 or 370 (W10).
Bet your Mustang engine has way more than twice the HP of the original straight 6, and you get way more than the original 60 MPH top speed too.
I’m no car buff, but I do appreciate excellent design and engineering. Long ago I put many thousand miles on my old Beemer R69 and R60/2.
Drive safe.
Roughly 130 hp, and she’ll do much more than the speedometer shows. In a test run I passed Grace as though she was standing still; later she told me she was doing 90 mph at the time.
You were just doing what Dr. Ferdinand Porsche Sr. had in mind, limited by the engine technology of the day. Hans Nibel developed the car based on one of Porsche’s last designs (maybe the last) before he left MBZ.
Fewer than 2000 were manufactured.
Just be thankful for one thing modern replicas have which few had in those days: hydraulic brakes.
Stopping in a straight line is important. Keeping mechanical or cable brake linkages adjusted exactly for all four wheels was a tricky and never ending maintenance task. Hydraulics do it “automagically”.
Enjoy tooling around Puget Sound in your très cool ride.
You have found yet another way to excite me. That is a beautiful car
You’ll get to see it one of these days, after Grace tunes it up. Seattle’s usually too rainy for it, but I figure I’ll knock around in it some next summer. 🙂
