Having some Ukrainian ancestry, I know some background. The composer, Leontovych, wrote this in 1914. It came from an ancient, pre-Christian Ukrainian folk song which was sung at the beginning of the New Year, which in those days was celebrated in the spring. As a spring song, it tells of a swallow flying into a home to proclaim a bountiful year. (The modern lyrics are about bells.) Under Christianity, the New Year was moved to winter, and this song would have been sung on January 13th, the date of the Russian New Year. I think all versions of the song are nice. I think I’ll play it on New Year’s Eve. My father was a very good tenor and he would have sung this in choir as a young man. (He’s the one who told me it was a Ukrainian folk song.)
