Most academics and many journalists labor under a view of politics so rosy it rises to the level of a delusion, such as in this book passage I recently saw on social media which declares that the descent of a republic into fascism is “one of the strangest chapters in history”. What a bizarre statement! For anyone who has lived in the real world for as long as I have and studied history and the behavior of masses as carefully as I have, there is one inescapable conclusion: The orderly (not “peaceful”) degeneration of a republic into a fascist state is not strange at all, not in any way. The premise that such a shift is “strange” derives from two pious fallacies not uncommon in ivory towers: 1) That the majority of the populace want self-determination rather than control from above (they do not; only about 1/3 do); and 2) That the majority don’t want the “other” oppressed. But in reality, a very large fraction of humans view the world as a hierarchy in which they would ideally occupy a position perhaps 1/3 of the way from the top, with their “betters” making wise decisions and doing the hard work of running things, and their subalterns in subservient roles. That’s why this kind of social arrangement, with exalted “leaders” at the top and servants at the bottom, with the typical citizen of the dominant race, caste, or class in the upper middle, is so common throughout human history. Republics take intellectual and moral work, and most people are intellectually and morally lazy. Furthermore, the kind of corporate power which is necessary for the development of fascism can only arise in relatively open societies rather than highly-stratified authoritarian ones; in other words, for fascism to arise from a relatively “democratic” society is not only not “strange”, it is the only kind of society from which fascism is likely to arise at all.

Skechers introduced a line of kids’ sneakers that contain a hidden compartment where parents can slip in an Apple AirTag…to…[surreptitiously] track the location of their…child’s shoes…Apple only advertises its AirTags as products to keep track of items like keys, wallets, or luggage — not human beings. But [abusive people] have been using the technology to [stalk others without their knowledge]…AirTags are not designed to be very good at tracking fast-moving things, like a kid on a school bus, [because they]…don’t have built-in GPS. Instead, they use Bluetooth beaconing technology to [sneaki]ly signal their presence to nearby Apple devices…[because of such] nefarious [misuse, there was]…a class action lawsuit. [Because of this] Apple has instituted some anti-stalking features, [but]…the continued normalization of this kind of surveillance could have [strong negative effects on young people’s mental health]…

As I wrote just over a year ago,
…attempts to sanitize the internet and turn it into a unidirectional “walled garden” more like cable TV than a “World Wide Web” have become more common, aggressive, and (thanks to the folly of Man) popular…
And now, it’s no longer accurate to describe these attacks on privacy, freedom, and adult agency as mere “attempts”, though for now it’s still easy to circumvent them by use of a VPN or clever tricks of the sort adolescents are invariably better at than adults. As the ever-vigilant Liz Brown recently wrote,
…the United Kingdom[‘s demands for ID]…check[ing are]…already reverberating beyond adult websites…Bluesky—a general-interest social media platform…will begin requiring U.K. users to prove they’re adults or otherwise find direct messaging and certain content inaccessible…the U.K.’s [misnamed] Online Safety Act…imposes rules on…a[n]y…digital service…publishing content that [a politician or bureaucrat has pointed at while barfing]…“harmful to children”…Reddit, [Twitter], Discord, and Grinder “have now announced they will deploy age assurance” schemes…At least 20 [American] states have already passed rules requiring age verification for adult content. And I think we can expect most, if not all, states to follow suit now that the Supreme Court has given it the OK…sex work is always the canary in the coal mine for free speech and privacy, and age-check requirements aren’t stopping with online porn. Already, some states are passing laws that necessitate social media platforms checking IDs or otherwise [harass]ing user[s]. A federal appeals court recently gave the green light to Mississippi to start enforcing a social media age verification law.
“Around the world, a new wave of [laws justified by labeling them] child protection…are forcing a profound shift that could normalize [intrusive surveillance] broadly across the web,” note[s an article]…at Wired…”courts in France ruled last week that porn sites can check users’ ages. Ireland [has] implemented age checking laws for video websites…The European Commission is testing an age-verification app. And in December, Australia’s strict social media ban for [people] under 16 will take effect, [extending even]…to search engines…The age of online anonymity…is rapidly vanishing. In its place, we get dubious “protection” measures that can be easily gamed…may send people to less regulated and less responsible platforms, put adults and children alike at risk of identity theft and other security violations, and make it much easier for authorities around the world to keep tabs on their citizens.
As if that’s not bad enough, some sites have decided not to use ID verification, but rather to subject their users to artificial stupidity instead:
Spotify is requiring users in the UK to verify they’re over 18…”to access certain age restricted content, like music videos tagged 18+”…if the age verification system…which involves getting your face scanned through your device’s camera [for a computer algorithm to guess] your age…[fails as such algorithms often do]…your Spotify account will be deleted…
There are of course ways to listen to music which involve no surveillance, including the quaint, old-fashioned device called a “CD”. But some other sites aren’t waiting for politicians to act, because they’re eager to force users into a facial-recognition database for their own noxious purposes:
YouTube will soon begin using [computer algorithms] to [guess] which users are under the age of 18. Starting August 13th, YouTube will [automatically restrict Americans a computer guesses are] underage…based on their activity and the age of their account…if the platform gets it wrong [as it often will], users can verify their age by uploading a government ID, taking a selfie, or entering a credit card…
Well, that whole internet thing was nice while it lasted.

The human and financial costs of our society’s sick infatuation with incarceration are staggering:

The city of Stamford settled the case [for $230,000] in April 2014…

A whole gang of sexual predators specifically targeting traumatized girls:
Five women who were abused as children by Rotherham grooming gangs were also raped by [cops] when they were as young as 12 years old…Three [typical and representative cops] have been arrested [so far]…while a fourth [rapist cop]…has since died. One [cop]…raped [his victims] in a [pigmobile and got her to submit by]…threaten[ing] to hand her back to a gang to suffer “multiple rapes” i[nstead of just the one by him. Other cops either]…turn[ed] a blind eye or participat[ed] in the grooming between the mid-90s and early 2000s. The wider scandal affected at least 1,400 girls in Rotherham and continued until at least 2013…

Usually, I see the first pullet eggs early in July, but because we got our chicks so late this year I assumed they’d start in August this time. Sure enough, on Friday (August 1st) I found this with several full-sized eggs in the nest (my chickens generally share one nest). So if things go as usual, we should start seeing a surge in the number of these over the next few weeks, and by October they should be getting up to full size. The weather has been strangely cool; we’re more than halfway through summer and have only had a handful of days that would even qualify as “very warm”, and only one I’d call “hot” (over 30o C). It’s also been much drier than usual; though we had a lot of rainy days, the actual amount of rainfall has been well below average. So I’m not sure what our fruit crop will look like this year; even the tomato plants seem sluggish (only one small tomato visible so far). But with four new white leghorns, at least we should have plenty of eggs.
