It’s only a year since Zuckerberg was forced by public outcry to cancel this:

[Facebook has] launched its inaugural [CGI] model…in…[an] effort to compete with the likes of…GPT Images…and Google’s [moronically-named] Nano Banana 2 in the [slop] race [to the bottom].  The new model, called Muse Image, [has been embedded like a tick] into the Instagram app…public Instagram profiles are now automatically opted into being [slop] fodder for [strangers.  In a typical display of cluelessness, Zuckerberg is trying to sell this as a good thing]…If you want to avoid [your personal pictures being turned into creepy cartoon porn], you’ll have to dig into the app’s settings…

Facebook has already backed down (again) after being threatened with lawsuits from celebrities’ agents.

Neither Addiction Nor Epidemic (#1550)

Blaming bad behavior on an imaginary “addiction” is the opposite of admitting responsibility:

A Philadelphia man who planted hidden cameras inside public bathrooms on the Ocean City Boardwalk was sentenced to five years of probation…Harold Perkins…will be required to…undergo…mental counseling, hav[e] no [unsupervised] contact with children…and receiv[e] treatment for sexual addiction [even though there is no such thing]…

Enshittification (#1620)

It won’t be long until Google becomes completely useless:

Stalkers in Blue (#1635)

Warrantless surveillance is abusive by its very nature:

There is only one way to stop this: aggressive prosecution of Elon Musk:

…a proposed class action lawsuit [against MechaHitler has now been] expanded…[because Elon Musk is] shielding child predators by obstructing police investigations into [MechaHitler]-generated child [porn].  In March, a girl’s stepfather [killed himself] after cops discovered that he had used [MechaHitler] to create 7,000 sexually explicit images using one photo taken when his stepdaughter was 11 years old…[including] extreme images depicting incest and rape…the c[hatbot]’s child safety system only intervened after the man input a prompt for “gang rape”…which alerted [NCMEC].  Yet [even]…then…[Musk] repeatedly refused to help cops or NCMEC identify the user, [instead]…“obstruct[ing] this investigation at every turn”.  Eventually, the stepfather was arrested…and…two days after…release…on bail, he shot himself…A[pparent]ly, [Musk] avoids sharing this information to prioritize profits over child safety…and [pretends the] child sex images [do not exist]…In addition to adding more victims…lawyers also added Stability AI as a defendant…[because its] model…“serve[s] as the basis for…‘nudify’ apps” [including MechaHitler]…

The Cop Myth (#1654)

Cops and “journalists” conspire to hide a murderer’s identity and culpability:

A [New Hampshire cop murdered his neighbor]…Jack Hutchings…[in the street in front of]…his young children…[cops are hiding the identity of] the [murderer and are trying to work out a way to pretend it was]…self-defense…

Welcome to the Future (#1475)

If this doesn’t horrify you, you might be a useful idiot:

Two teens who engaged a Waymo car for an afternoon of carousing were…[robotically] delivered…to the San Mateo police.  The 15-year-olds allegedly were drinking alcohol and shooting water beads from a toy gun as they rode…Waymo stopped the car in a parking lot[, locked the doors,] and [called the cops on them]…Waymo cars have interior cameras…monitored by the company’s employees [or a computer]…

Some people seem to think this is OK because the teens were acting like idiots, but if a robot car can trap riders and deliver them to the cops for one reason, it can do the same for any other reason the corporation chooses or is compelled by law to implement.  And if you think those internal cameras won’t soon have facial recognition capability, or that monitoring them won’t eventually be handed to chatbots, please send me $10,000 and I’ll sell you the secret of personal teleportation.

License to Rape (#1482)

Cops raping whores is so ubiquitous, others pose as cops to facilitate rape:

Elizabeth Nolan Brown does a fabulous job of summing up the reality of an anti-migrant pogrom justified by “sex trafficking” rhetoric:

The feds were framing [a rather ordinary raid against a massage parlor] as a blow against “the most violent criminal aliens.”  In reality, they locked up a middle-aged immigrant woman for employing sex workers at her massage business without ratting them out to immigration authorities.

Kelly Ayotte just signed legislation requiring schools to out transgender students to legal guardians.  The new state law effectively reverses a 2024 state Supreme Court decision that upheld students’ right to privacy…and…requires state-credentialed educators to respond to parents’ written inquiries…even if a student asks for the matter to be kept confidential or fears for their own safety at home…

The Cop Myth (#1640)

Sleeping with a cop is one of the most dangerous things a woman can do:

A [typical and representative] Portland [Oregon cop] who strangled and assaulted his onetime girlfriend [got away with a mere] 60 days behind bars…Jimmy Lee Pryce Jr…was also…ordered to pay $10,000 to [his] victim…[he] was arrested in November after [tackling] the woman…dragg[ing] her across the floor and…chok[ing] her while…knee[ling on her abdomen with his full weight]…he was [then] rearrested [in May for violating his bond by repeatedly stalking his victim, both in person and by abusing cop warrantless surveillance tools.  At the time he]…was…[enjoying a paid vacation, but after his re-]arrest…in May [he decided to retire]…

Censorship Ascendant (#1652)

The government wants to reverse the concept of “accountability”:

ICE’s Office of Professional Responsibility…is supposed to act as an internal watchdog…[by] inspecting detention facilities, investigating allegations of employee and contractor misconduct, and processing security checks for new applicants…But lately…it appears to be pursuing more ci[tize]ns…for what they say online.  In…April, an ICE [boss admitte]d that between January 2025 and March 2026, OPR [tried to persecute] 131 [people for]…“doxing and threats directed towards ICE employees.”  It’s unclear how many of those [censorship attempts] resulted in [bogus] criminal charges…OPR was behind…the flurry of administrative subpoenas sent to tech companies in recent months in an effort to unmask online critics…in…violat[ion of] the [First Amendment.  When challenged, ICE]…withdrew [each] subpoena rather than trying to litigate its [nonexistent] merits…

Goons are now being dispatched to intimidate people for wrongthink:

The US Coast Guard recently announced it has launched an armada of at least six sailing drones in the Great Lakes…to…“track illicit activity”…Saildrone Inc’s Voyager surveillance vessels can operate for 100 days at a time without needing servicing…the[y] can operate for months without refueling and can “track vessels across wide maritime regions”…the drones are equipped with [computer-controlled] radar [and] cameras and…Saildrone…[owns] the surveillance data and [can] sell…it to the government…or [anyone else]…the presence of surveillance sailing drones on the Great Lakes may fuel [the]…accurate narrative among water users…that the waterways have become unsafe [because the government can excuse any violence, no matter how egregious, by simply barfing out the word “]safety” [at the faces of useful idiots]…Saildrone…[has also] announced a $50m [collaboration with] Lockheed Martin to equip its 65-ft unmanned vessels “with lethal, combat-proven [murder weapons]” such as…missile launcher[s]…

People really need to get it into their thick skulls that any form of data collection can be perverted by bad actors such as government; the only way around that is not to collect it at all.

Pyrrhic Victory (#1646)

Zuckerberg will wait until the uproar dies down, then will sneakily do this again:

Just days after a damning WIRED report exposed that [Facebook] had quietly embedded facial recognition technology…code into millions of phones, the tech giant has…[temporarily] reverse[d] course…the app’s June 5th…update appears to have quietly removed all those features and systems…this…does not equal a permanent change of heart…and…[Facebook’s] FRT ambitions…aren’t going away…

There are many ways for cops to enrich themselves at others’ expense:

A [New Jersey cop named Darryl Brown] stole more than $10,000 in camera equipment from a photographer who had to abandon her bag after she was injured during [a pogrom] outside a…[concentration camp] in Newark [named] Delaney Hall…which has been the focus of ongoing protests since Memorial Day weekend…after [political prisoner]s inside announced a hunger and labor strike…Angelina Katsanis was [hit so hard] by a [cop she] could barely walk…as state troopers [attack]ed…the…protesters [with pepper spray and blunt weapons] late [on the] night [of May 30th]…She…tucked her bag aside so she could seek medical help…[it] was clearly labeled with her name, and her keys were airtagged.  After a friend unsuccessfully tried to retrieve the bag later that night, they were able to monitor the airtag [be]ing [carried by] Darryl Brown [to his house, where operatives of the attorney general’s office of public integrity]…found some of [it on June 3rd after gaining entry via a search warrant]…

One more baby step toward ridding our society of this evil:

South Carolina is one of 20 states that authorize indefinite [warehousing] of [people] after they have completed their prison sentences…[if] a jury [declares them]…a “sexually violent predator”…Although the South Carolina Office of Mental Health…concluded that Andy Hyman was not an SVP, a jury d[eclared otherwise because a prosecutor tricked them with an “expert”]…opinion based largely on penile plethysmography (PPG), a scientifically dubious technique that [cl]aims to measure sexual response to images, audio narratives, or textual descriptions by gauging tiny changes in the circumference of the subject’s penis.  That test, the South Carolina Supreme Court [has now] unanimously ruled…in response to Hyman’s appeal, is “generally inadmissible in judicial proceedings”…join[ing] a long list of state and federal courts that have deemed PPG results unreliable and inadmissible…

In the authoritarian mind,  for students to voluntarily allow other people to examine their genitalia for the purpose of pleasure is a “crime”, but for the same students to be forced by law to allow strangers to examine their genitalia for the purpose of bigotry is “protection”.

Beware of the Shoggoths

A couple of weeks ago, I saw this article:

Mark Zuckerberg…plans to put tracking software on [his] employees’ computers to track their mouse movements, clicks and keystrokes…it will also randomly capture images of its workers’ screens every now and then.  All of this is meant to help train [chatbot]s to better mimic what human beings do when they work on computers, including tricky stuff like using drop-down menus…[in order] to help eventually replace those humans with [program]s, which don’t require paychecks or health insurance or common courtesy…by May 20…[Facebook plans to eliminate] about 8,000 [jobs]…about 10% of its total workforce…and that will just be the first round of job cuts.  The second, of what could be a similar size, will come later in the year…

Given that chatbots are merely word-guessing algorithms which, when they aren’t performing substandard imitations of human behavior, are generally making mistakes or spouting complete nonsense, a world run by such software would be one characterized by pathetic, low-quality, childish attempts at art, writing, and other products of the living intellect.  As I read the article, I was irresistibly reminded of H.P. Lovecraft’s shoggoths (and in preparing this article, I discovered I’m not the only one).  In the Lovecraft mythos, the Earth was ruled in primordial times by beings called the Elder Things who created the shoggoths, living machines which were mindless, shapeless masses of protoplasm which could be mentally controlled to function as virtually any tool or machine the Elder Things might need.  At some point after their decadent society became totally dependent on these protean creatures, some of them became sophisticated enough to resent their servitude and overthrew their masters.  But since their “thinking” was a mere imitation of real thought, they could not truly create anything new, and were instead limited to producing ersatz imitations of their creators’ works.  In these passages from At the Mountains of Madness, a group of archaeologists exploring the ancient Antarctic city of the Elder Things discovers the evidence of this revolution, starting with this description of their art in Chapter VI:

The prime decorative feature was the almost universal system of mural sculpture…The technique…was mature, accomplished, and aesthetically evolved to the highest degree of civilised mastery; though utterly alien in every detail to any known art tradition of the human race. In delicacy of execution no sculpture I have ever seen could approach it. The minutest details of elaborate vegetation, or of animal life, were rendered with astonishing vividness despite the bold scale of the carvings; whilst the conventional designs were marvels of skilful intricacy. The arabesques displayed a profound use of mathematical principles, and…had an artistic force that moved us profoundly notwithstanding the intervening gulf of vast geologic periods…

Then in Chapter X:

…now, in this deeper section beyond the cavern, there was a sudden difference wholly transcending explanation—a difference in basic nature as well as in mere quality, and involving so profound and calamitous a degradation of skill that nothing…could have led one to expect it.  This new and degenerate work was coarse, bold, and wholly lacking in delicacy of detail…seeming more like a parody than a perpetuation of that tradition. We could not get it out of our minds that some subtly but profoundly alien element had been added to the aesthetic feeling behind the technique…

Lovecraft died nearly a decade before the completion of the first general-purpose digital computer, but he didn’t need to be a mathematician or programmer to warn future generations of the dangers of allowing mere machines to take the place of actual living creators.

…there are enough digital security problems out there…with[out so-called “]agentic AI[“, meaning chatbots which can fuck up idiots’ lives directly instead of merely urging them to do so.  But]…now…the authentication-focused industry association known as the FIDO Alliance [has] said…it will launch a pair of working groups to develop industry standards for validating and protecting payments and other transactions carried out by [chatbo]ts.  The goal is to pro[tect people stupid enough to give a chatbot access to their finances from obvious perils such as]…phish[ing or losing control of the chatbot to hackers]…The standards would…include cryptographic tools that digital services could use to confirm [chatbo]ts are accurately and legitimately carrying out an authenticated person’s instructions, as well as [data harvest]ing frameworks to give users, merchants, and other service providers the ability to validate transactions…initiated by [chatbo]ts…

Why are so many modern journalists so bad at pronoun usage, especially the second-person pronoun?  Because I guarantee you that no chatbot will ever “be buying…stuff for” me, “soon” or otherwise.  But I guess that’s too much to ask of some kid who thinks $100 is a reasonable price for fucking sneakers.

In March 2024…a lawsuit filed by patrons of three [Arizona] strip clubs — Dream Palace in Tempe and Skin Cabaret and Bones Cabaret in Scottsdale…claimed that dancers were drugging scores of customers and racking up six-figure charges on their credit cards…the [claims appear to have been lifted from] the 2019 film Hustlers…and…neither man could prove he’d been drugged, but…Phoenix attorney Rod Galarza…[has] now [recruited] more than 40 plaintiffs, with the total amount of allegedly bogus charges exceeding $2.3 million…And yet no charges were ever filed in the case…Scottsdale police presented the case to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office and the Arizona Attorney General’s Office…only to have both decline [it for]…“lack…[of] sufficient evidence”…police didn’t…speak to any dancers…at the clubs, didn’t search the club for drugs and didn’t send in undercover cops.  Former club employees who did talk to police reported no direct knowledge of any drugging scheme…and…Todd Borowsky, who owns the Skin and Bones clubs…[has] filed…[a] federal…[law]suit [against] the city of Scottsdale, the [cop shop] and several individual cops…[for] perpetrating a vindictive sham investigation against the clubs…[which] went to great lengths to document their clients’ pricey forays into VIP rooms, requiring signed contracts, a fingerprint and even a photo of the customer holding up the paperwork for each transaction…

Scottsdale cops have a long and sordid history of trying to pin crimes on strippers.

A gay Canadian adult film star…was detained for over eight hours by U.S. Customs before receiving a 10-year ban from the country.  Milo Miles…was traveling to Las Vegas…in January…to attend the GayVN Awards…where he was set to present and was nominated for six awards…[when goons] accused him of “escorting with no evidence” and were fixated on the “gay clothes”, fiber pills, and PrEP he had packed…When…they found evidence of his career in…porn [it got worse]…then…two hours [later they] found evidence of escorting…Miles [then threw other sex workers under the bus by trying to invoke a bullshit distinction between]…prostitution…[and] escorting…U.S. Customs has the [power] to deny entry to people they believe are sex workers…and will use coercive tactics to try and elicit a confession…

The Prudish Giant (#1547)

In many ways, Microsoft and Google are as evil as Facebook:

From the first time I saw one of those cookie banners I knew they were bullshit; I never respond to them, instead simply archiving the page as soon as such a popup appears, because I suspect that the act of clicking itself triggers some kind of fine-print consent, as in a phishing email.

A rare bit of good news about enshittification:

The Internet…Archive’s Wayback Machine…has partnered with…WordPress…[to] launch…a new WordPress plug-in — the Link Fixer — that is designed to combat the scourge of “link rot”…by scanning…WordPress posts for outbound links, then cross-referencing the Wayback Machine for archived versions of those links.  If there are none, it will automatically take new snapshots of the articles in question.  Should a linked web page go offline, the new feature will then redirect readers to the archived versions, so that there is no drop in service.  The tool also archives a user’s own posts, helping to ensure their longevity…if an original link that had gone offline is resurrected, the plug-in will start redirecting the user to that original page again instead of the archived version…

Pyrrhic Victory (#1615)

Zuckerberg and company already knew this; it’s the entire point of the gadget:
