Paying the Bills

Six weeks ago, I told y’all that I’m facing a projected $3000 shortfall for my annual operating budget, and asked for help making up that difference.  Well, several of my loyal readers have already stepped up, generously helping me to the tune of $2400.  But I’m still facing a $600 shortfall; it isn’t much, but an unpaid bill is still unpaid even if it’s close. Texas doesn’t care how many women die because of its terrible laws:

Nevaeh Crain was crying in pain, too weak to walk…feverish and vomiting…The first [emergency room she tried]…diagnosed her with strep throat without investigating her sharp abdominal cramps.  At the second, she screened positive for sepsis…But doctors said her six-month fetus had a heartbeat [so she was sent away]…on Crain’s third hospital visit, an obstetrician insisted on two ultrasounds to “confirm fetal demise”…before moving her to intensive care.  By then, more than two hours after her arrival, Crain’s blood pressure had plummeted and…her organs began failing.  Hours later, she was dead…Texas’s abortion ban threatens prison time for interventions that end a fetal heartbeat…It includes exceptions for life-threatening conditions, but…that…[means] medical teams are wasting precious time debating legalities and creating documentation, preparing for the possibility that they’ll need to explain their actions to a jury and judge…

The Free Press recently published a bizarrely-anachronistic article that reads like something from the height of “sex trafficking” hysteria, 12 years ago.  If you have the stomach to actually read it, you’ll quickly discover why: both the writer and her primary source are Trumpists, and they blame “America’s fastest-growing criminal industry” (remember when that claim was obligatory in every “sex trafficking” tall tale?) on that Trumpist bugaboo, “Biden’s open border”, which apparently exists in the same fantasy world inhabited by toddler hookers shuttled around the country by pimp gorillas in dog crates to be raped 100 times a day by invisible men.  That source is a wannabe “rescuer” of the MAGA variety, similar to the nut bars in Tennessee who were recently raided by the TBI, or the associated Froot Loops in Arizona who harass aid workers and chase people through the desert.  Stenographer Madeleine Rowley gullibly swallows and regurgitates the self-aggrandizing wanking fantasies, the racist tropes, the bogus statistics and psychobabble, the “gang” copaganda, the asinine bragging of dangerous psychopaths like Grady Judd, etc; the only things missing are “King of the Hill” posturing and the claim that the average “victim” is 13.

The Texas Department of [Torturing Caged Humans] has banned yet another book in its prisons…this time, it was written by inmates themselves.  TEXAS LETTERS…[is] an ongoing anthology of letters written by [prisoners] detailing their experiences with solitary confinement…The publisher and editor, Damascus James…describes the project as a work that “explores the loss of sanity, humanness, and, oftentimes, hope through the personal writings” of [human being]s who have spent months, years, and sometimes even decades in solitary confinement.  Much of the collection features portrayals of violence from [screws] and grueling accounts of the living conditions…The banning of TEXAS LETTERS was not a surprise for James.  Not only does the Texas prison authority have a reputation for book banning but also for trying to e[uphemize] the term solitary confinement…

German…politicians are responding to an August attack at a festival in Solingen with proposals for knife controls and biometric surveillance.  Given that the country’s already restrictive laws didn’t deter a terrorist from committing violence, it’s not clear why more laws would finally do the trick…The suspect is a 26-year-old Syrian man who was denied asylum and ordered to leave the country; he didn’t…he’s not a law-abiding guy…Would a terrorist…be deterred by stern signs forbidding carrying knives at festivals?…Also proposed is wider use of biometric data, including automated scanning of publicly available photos, audio files, and video on platforms including social media.  Any online information would be considered fair game for German authorities to grab and match against data from protests, crimes, suspects, or…watch lists…the coalition government is keen on expanding mass surveillance even though it was elected in part on a promise to curb such practices…

Politicians will use any trick to gain control of the internet:

The U.S. and the U.K. have signed a joint agreement to coordinate efforts to [control the] internet…[using the perennial excuse of] “stronger protections for children”…though…the U.K. [has]…no…free-speech legal tradition or anything like First Amendment jurisprudence …the agreement…[pre]tend[s] that U.S. and U.K. rights and practices can be considered compatible in order to enforce internet [censorship] of materials [politicians in] either…[country point at while belching out] “harmful to children”…according to…the Online Safety Act and the [opinion of]…the Baroness Bertin, [who has had a hand in drafting laws in the US], all adult content would fall into [bannable] categories …By signing the joint agreement, the U.S. appears to endorse…age verification[, which]…has repeatedly been struck down as unconstitutional by U.S. courts…The U.S. domestic legislative proposal most analogous to the OSA is the Kid’s Online Safety Act (KOSA), which is currently stuck in Congress…because of serious constitutional and privacy concerns…

When Ambulance-Chasers Run the Hospitals (#1444)

The claims in these nuisance lawsuits are increasingly absurd:

More than a dozen states are filing lawsuits…accusing TikTok of harming the well-being of children by using [magically-]addictive product features that keep them [spellbound] on the platform, in a [moronic] salvo that amplifies the company’s legal perils as it tries to stave off a federal ban.  Attorneys general from 13 states and the District of Columbia are a[bus]ing…local consumer protection laws by [ascrib]ing [supernatural powers] to [a program], exposing young users to mental and physical risk…The complaints represent the second multistate attempt to [loot] a major social media company…[using spurious] claims they are contributing to a youth mental health crisis in the United States [which is actually caused by government-encouraged intrusive surveillance and infantilization of young adults], following a flurry of similar lawsuits against Facebook…last year…California AG Rob Bonta…is co-leading the [witch hunt] alongside…New York AG Letitia James, [claiming]…that TikTok [vampirical]ly designed the app to “feed on young users”…[the rest of the nitwit parade consists of] Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Jersey, Oregon, South Carolina, Vermont and Washington…

Politicians want to pay for “self-care” for cops traumatized by raping dirty whores:

Both houses of Congress have approved the IMPACTT Human Trafficking Act…and it’s now awaiting President Joe Biden’s signature.  The bill would provide “self-care” services to Homeland Security Investigations…staff [“]exposed[” to women they infantilize as “]victims of human trafficking[” they choose]…to subject…to…traumatizing experiences…[most] of the “human trafficking” work the agency does just involves plain old prostitution stings…particularly when the[y] target Asian massage businesses.  At best, these stings tend to be dubious uses of resources and authority…At worst, they put people vulnerable to violence and sexual exploitation in more precarious positions—by [brutaliz]ing…sex workers and saddling them with court fees and criminal records…or [steal]ing…the assets of immigrant sex workers and masseuses…and even [raping them]…

A judge in Georgia…[named] Robert McBurney…ruled the [state’s 6-week] abortion ban unconstitutional under Georgia’s state constitution…“‘liberty’…in Georgia includes in its meaning, in its protections, and in its bundle of rights the power of a woman to control her own body, to decide what happens to it and in it, and to reject state interference with her healthcare choices,” McBurney wrote…“While the State’s interest in protecting ‘unborn’ life is compelling, until that life can be sustained by the State ― and not solely by the woman compelled by the Act to do the State’s work ― the balance of rights favors the woman”…Physicians in the state can now provide abortions until fetal viability, reverting to Georgia’s 2019 abortion law…

If “official” busybodies can spy on you via your car, so can unofficial ones:

…a group of independent security researchers revealed that they’d found a flaw in a web portal operated by…Kia that let the researchers reassign control of the internet-connected features of most modern Kia vehicles…from the smartphone of a car’s owner to the hackers’ own phone or computer…they were able to scan virtually any internet-connected Kia vehicle’s license plate and within seconds gain the ability to track that car’s location, unlock the car, honk its horn, or start its ignition at will.  After the researchers alerted Kia to the problem in June, Kia appears to have fixed the vulnerability in its web portal…But Kia’s patch is far from the end of the car industry’s web-based security problems…a slew of similar web-based vulnerabilities…affect…cars sold by Acura, Genesis, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Toyota, and more…

A federal jury has convicted a [typical and representative] Border Patrol [thug] of abducting and [rap]ing a 15-year-old girl in southern Arizona.  Aaron Mitchell…approached the student as she was waiting for school to start and “asked for her papers” before [flashing his badge]…and [claiming he was arresting her]…he…then…brought [her] to his apartment [and raped] her [repeatedly for] several hours.  Mitchell eventually [dumped her] back [at her] school and told her not to tell anyone…[but] had made an internet search while…holding the girl captive to find out “how long it takes to smother someone”…[he] is now facing a life sentence…

To Molest and Rape (#1469)

Cops should not be allowed anywhere near legal minors:

An Indianapolis [cop named]…Kamal Bola…[has been arrested and] charged with…three counts of child molesting, [including] one [instance where] he [threatened] the [victim with] deadly force…[and was reported by the victim’s] family…Bola [is] the fourth…Indianapolis [cop]…arrested…this year…[for] sex crimes.  Javed Richards was arrested in August…[for] child pornography…Myron Howard was arrested in April [for multiple rapes]…And…Paul Humphrey…was a[rest]ed [in January for repeatedly] sexually abusing [the] 15-year-old [daughter of people who thought he was a friend]…

Sleeping with a cop is one of the most dangerous things a woman can do:

A Bridgeport[, West Virginia cop named] William Townsend [was arrest]ed [for] stalking and harassing his ex-wife and her new boyfriend…from July 2023 through April 2024, Townsend has “repeatedly engaged in a course of conduct” that has caused his ex’s new boyfriend to fear for his safety…Townsend…parked [his pigmobile outside her apartment] behind her boyfriend’s vehicle while…sending…“vulgar sexually-related messages” referencing her and her new boyfriend…Townsend also called [the man] a “child molester,” harassed the couple in person at…school [events]…threatened a criminal investigation of the [man] and his friend and made numerous [slanderous] comments to their children about [him] as well…

If you need a law like this to control your teen offspring, you’ve already lost them:

…If a [legal minor] is raped by their parent, Idaho medical providers now require th[e rapist]’s permission to administer the rape kit that would prove their own guilt.  Preventing young people from receiving medical care of their own accord has long been a priority for [Idaho] Republicans…[who] brought that…to fruition this July…after a national [authoritarian] push to keep young people from receiving gender-affirming medical care…

The Cop Myth (#1403)

41% of cops admit to beating their wives; some don’t stop with mere beating:

[A] Maricopa County A[rizona cop named]…John C. Byrd…[was arrested for the] murder…[of his] wife, Elizabeth Byrd, [on July 31st after]…A woman told police that Elizabeth failed to show up for a gym class that they always attended together and…had contacted Elizabeth’s 11-year-old son via text and learned that…he…and his two [younger] siblings…had not seen their mother all day and that her bedroom door was locked…[cops] found the wife dead [of strangulation] on her bedroom floor…Byrd [confessed to the crime when arrested.  Ironically,] Byrd…worked in the Family Violence Bureau…

Panopticon (#1448)

[Washington] D.C. …[cops] will start using drones in [many more] situations to try to [subj]ect residents [to even more surveillance using the typical cop excuse of “]crime[” while the city also] adds hundreds of closed-circuit TV cameras and license plate readers…Chief of Police Pamela Smith said…“We will not be…using facial recognition with the drones yet”…The ACLU’s executive director [said]…”The growing use of surveillance technology by law enforcement agencies without limits, transparency, and accountability is deeply concerning…and…does not have sufficient guardrails to ensure our privacy”…

Vulture Watching (#1462)

Oh look, the totally-predictable results of bad laws are happening just as sane people said they would:

Even as the Biden administration publicly warned hospitals to treat pregnant patients in emergencies, facilities continue to violate the federal law…[since] the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the constitutional right to an abortion more than two years ago.  More than 100 pregnant women in medical distress who sought help from emergency rooms were turned away or negligently treated since 2022…Two women – one in Florida and one in Texas – were left to miscarry in public restrooms.  In Arkansas, a woman went into septic shock and her fetus died after an emergency room sent her home.  At least four other women with ectopic pregnancies had trouble getting any treatment, including one California woman who needed a blood transfusion after she sat for nine hours in an emergency waiting room.  [EMTALA] says hospitals must offer abortions when needed to save a woman’s health, despite state bans.  Texas [says women should be left to die if their doctors guess wrong]…and…the Supreme Court declined to resolve the issue…
