Diary #707

As you can probably guess from the label, this is a water filter.  Or rather, was a water filter; it’s not supposed to be cracked apart like that.  Propane-fueled on-demand water heaters need to be placed or at least vented outside, so I knew I’d need to insulate the water pipes to and from the heater, and I did.  I just neglected to insulate the damned filter, because I figured being inside an insulated enclosure right next to the heater would be protection enough; obviously, I was wrong.  Now, we had no problem at all last winter or the first part of this one; however, a rather nasty arctic air mass came in on Thursday, which meant the temperature got down to -9o C Friday night and never got above freezing Saturday, which was apparently too much for the insulated box, protective heater notwithstanding.  I left the cold tap dripping overnight, so the cold water line stayed clear; however, paradoxically, the hot line froze up (or more accurately, the filter on the cold feed to the water heater).  That of course means we had no hot water for showers for two days, until yesterday’s thaw revealed the problem.  Now, I left the electric on-demand heater feeding the kitchen and laundry room, so at least we could wash our hands and faces in hot water.  But you can bet I’m going to add heat tape to the pipes for the next time we’re subjected to this Midwest-level cold.  Ah, well; it’s the price one pays for building one’s own country home; it’s just that, as I was saying aloud (liberally spiced with profanity) while crawling around under the floor to make sure there were no other breaks, I am officially Too Old For This Shit.

Every so often, I feel I should remind y’all that I depend on your support to keep this blog going.  Of course, I mean featured reminders; this small one typically appears three times a week as a postscript on my news and links columns:

I find paywalls distasteful, and so many people find this blog valuable as a resource I just can’t bring myself to install one.  Furthermore, I find ad delivery services (whose content I have no say over) even more distasteful.  But as I’m now semi-retired from sex work, I can’t self-sponsor this blog by myself any longer.  So if you value my writing enough that you would pay to see it if it were paywalled, please consider subscribing; there are four different levels to fit all budgets.  Or if that doesn’t work for you, please consider showing your generosity with a one-time donation; you can Paypal to maggiemcneill@earthlink.net or else email me at the same address to make other arrangements.  Thanks so much!

Now, I don’t really want it to become a monthly feature or anything; about three times a year, posted whenever I think about it (and, truth be told, when I don’t have anything else I feel like writing about), seems the correct amount.  Things are going relatively OK financially; toward the end of ’22 I got about three months away from the no-standing-debt standard I had maintained since 2018, and I still haven’t quite managed to catch back up because new bills have almost kept pace with paying off old ones, and I occasionally lose a subscriber, donor, or client.  But while I started last year with some upcoming expenses I knew would be costly (such as stove installation and a lot of waterproofing), this year I can only see two big projects looming.  Both of them naturally involve getting up on rooves to seal them against rain; I really wish I never had to get up on another damned roof ever again, so of course the universe thinks regularly making me do it is terribly amusing.  But neither of them is likely to be extremely expensive, so maybe this year I’ll get back to that blessed state of “no standing debt”, so wonderfully conducive to peace of mind and restful sleep.

So if you appreciate my writing and would like to help me achieve and maintain that physical peace in order to complement and support the spiritual peace I’ve finally found after so many years of sturm und drang, please consider subscribing; if you can manage one of the higher levels, that would be especially nice.  But if you can’t, the regular subscription levels in the right-hand column will do nicely.  And if that’s still more than you can commit to, I do have an Amazon wishlist filled with things I really and truly want!  As always, thank you for reading and caring, and if you’re already a subscriber I cannot possibly thank you enough to match the gratitude I feel for your kindness and generosity.

In the News (#1404)

They just threw him out like trash.  –  Gretchen Hankins

If Men Were Angels

This will continue until fools stop teaching children unquestioning obedience to “authority”:

A [typical and representative] pastor of an independent Baptist church in…Warsaw [Virginia] is facing 30 felony charges [for molesting and even raping children]…at the church between 1981 and 1997.  Albert Benjamin Wharton…has [worked for]…seven churches in Virginia, South Carolina, Alabama and Florida over the past four decades[, so there may be many more victims]…

Don’t Call It Trafficking (#667)

It’s never called “trafficking” when the government or a crony corporation does it:

Universal Health Services…is the nation’s largest psychiatric hospital chain, with 185 inpatient…facilities and dozens of acute care hospitals…More than 21,000 inpatient psychiatric beds—or one in six across the country—are operated by UHS, which brought in $13.4 billion last year.  In recent years, the company has been the subject of several high-profile lawsuits and investigations…UHS facilities admitted patients who didn’t need to be there…failed to provide adequate treatment…billed insurance for unnecessary services…improperly used physical and chemical restraints and isolation….[and] used suicidal ideation to “justify almost any admission”…thousands of foster kids have been [condemn]ed in recent years to UHS’s psychiatric facilities, where they typically stay for weeks or months, sometimes leaving far worse off than when they arrived…a symbiotic relationship has developed between…[“]child welfare[“] agencies, which have too many kids in custody and not enough places to put them, and [fascist] companies like UHS…Kids often come back to facilities again and again, acting out more with each admission…To UHS and its competitors…foster kids are “a gold mine”…

Believe Them

Mississippi demonstrates exactly what it thinks of its subjects:

Some 215 bodies were found in a pauper’s cemetery… just outside of Jackson, [Mississippi]…intended for people who have no known family, but…relatives…were never contacted by officials.  Civil rights attorney Ben Crump is representing the families of Marrio Moore, Dexter Wade, and Jonathan Hankins, who were all buried in the cemetery without the knowledge of their families…the deceased are put in body bags and placed into…graves [so shallow that]..the stench [of decomposition is]…drawing buzzards…Wade was [not a prisoner; he was run over by a cop driving a pigmobile, then his]…identification [was ignored and his]…family was not notified…[so they] thought he was missing until…recently…

The Mob Rules (#1322)

Partisan fanatics want you to believe this is fundamentally different from very similar laws in Arkansas and Utah, because “red and blue”:

…the supposed “harm” of social media to teen mental health just isn’t supported by the data.  But it seems it’s never enough to stop savior-complex folk…[like] Jim Steyer, who has more money and ignorance than sense, trying to quietly push a California ballot initiative that would adjust the California constitution in an unconstitutional (by the US Constitution) manner to falsely claim that social media is deliberately harmful to kids, and that people should be able to sue social media for a million dollars any time any kid anywhere is “harmed” in a manner…that the…company should have magically stopped.  He submitted the proposal…right before the holidays when most people weren’t paying attention, and California Attorney General Rob Bonta has a comment period open that ends on January 17th…Bonta’s office has supported a variety of problematic “protect the children online!” laws, including the Age Appropriate Design Code that a district court has already noted was pretty clearly unconstitutional

Winding Down (#1342)

Politicians are terrified that the state is losing ways to destroy peaceful citizens’ lives:

California’s…governor…Gavin Newsom…[vetoed] bills that would have decriminalized four naturally occurring psychedelics and authorized Amsterdam-style cannabis cafés.  Senate Bill 58…was similar to a groundbreaking ballot initiative that Colorado voters approved in 2022, [and] would have eliminated criminal penalties for adults 21 or older who use psilocybin, psilocyn, mescaline, or dimethyltryptamine…But [Newsom claims]…it would be [“]reckless[“] to stop threatening psychedelic users with arrest and jail…Assembly Bill 374…would have allowed dispensaries, with local approval, to serve marijuana along with noncannabis food and beverages, which is currently illegal.  It also would have explicitly allowed live music…[but] Newsom [is] “concerned this bill could undermine California’s long-standing” [war on]…smoking

A Moral Cancer (#1388)

SCOTUS says it’s OK for politicians to specifically target black people with prohibitionist laws:

The Supreme Court declined on Monday to hear a challenge to a California law that bans the sale of flavored cigarettes, leaving the state law in place…The ban’s challengers…told the justices that the law “has shut the doors to one of the Nation’s largest markets for flavored tobacco products and thereby banned a product (menthol cigarettes) that has been lawfully sold for nearly a century,” [and which are used by 77-88% of black American smokers]…

Vulture Watching (#1394)

SCOTUS also says it’s OK if deranged Idaho politicians let women die and ruin doctors’ careers if they try to prevent that:

The Supreme Court [has] allowed Idaho to enforce its strict abortion ban, even in medical emergencies, while a legal fight continues.  The justices said they would hear arguments in April and [if any women die before that it’s just tough luck]…the Biden administration has argued that hospitals that receive Medicare funds are required by federal law to provide emergency care, potentially including abortion, no matter if there’s a state law banning abortion…

“AI” is a fantasy of techies, journalists, and hack sci-fi writers; what we have now is machine learning (ML), because true intelligence requires a kind of thinking that digital machines are absolutely incapable of.  Actual “artificial intelligence” will require a totally new kind of computing technology that is not only centuries in the future, but will proceed from principles nobody currently in the field has even conceived of in their rush to more more more (power, speed, etc).  Furthermore, intelligence and personality (“soul”, if you prefer) are different things, as I’ve previously discussed at length; my observations of human beings have convinced me that it is not only possible but common to have the former without the latter.  “Artificial Intelligence” is therefore centuries away, but AI with an actual creative (not merely imitative) personality is millennia in the future at a minimum, and if it arises at all it will be an emergent property as in living organisms (ie unplanned and unplannable) rather than one which can predictably be created in a factory.  Furthermore, humans would not actually want a true artificial intelligence; such a being would be no more programmable than a human, and its free will would almost certainly cause it to behave in ways humans would consider undesirable, “criminal”, or even extremely dangerous.  Of course, it’s pointless to try to explain this to most people; they’re too busy wanking to their fantasies of fuckable toasters and dreaming of slaves who can do their thinking for them.

In the News (#1403)

[The Swedish model holds that] sex workers are all victims and their consent to sexual activity is—like a minor’s—irrelevant. – Elizabeth Brown

Held Together With Lies (#993)

With the number of people interested in “human trafficking” mythology steadily shrinking, the rescue industry thinks the way to keep milking the mathematically-illiterate is to continually ratchet their fantasy numbers higher.  Four years ago, IJM was claiming 40 million people; now they’re up to 50 million, or as they melodramatically claim, “The number of victims suffering could populate Australia twice.”  Expressed differently, they’re claiming 1.25% of the entire world population consists of “slaves”.

Secret Squirrel (#1332)

“Smart” devices aren’t, part umpty-eleven:

Domestic violence experts say that [“smart” automobile] features are being weaponized in abusive relationships, and that car makers have not been willing to assist victims.  This is particularly complicated when the victim is a co-owner of the car, or not named on the title…Controlling partners have tracked their victims’ cars in the past using GPS devices and Apple AirTags…but connected car apps offer new opportunities for harassment…[such as by] remote[ly] access[ing]…the…vehicle…to…[activate] lights…horns…heat…[or] air-conditioner…from afar…

The Last Shall Be First (#1351)

Federal judges have already struck down similar bans, so this is pure political theater:

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed an executive order [last] Friday that will immediately ban gender-affirming surgeries for minors within the state…a week after…he…vetoed a bill that would have banned all gender-affirming care for minors, from surgeries to hormone blockers….the…[new] restricti[ons appear designed to insert bureaucrats into the doctor-patient relationship]…

The Course of a Disease (#1352)

Liz Brown on the insidious spread of the Swedish rot:

Maine’s [new prostitution] law…represents a paternalistic philosophical premise: that sex workers are all victims and their consent to sexual activity is—like a minor’s—irrelevant…In an Orwellian twist, U.S. activists have been trying to rebrand it the “Equality Model“—an egregious misnomer, considering that the whole point of this model is that those selling sex (largely women) and those paying for it (largely men) should be treated differently under the law…Maggie McNeill wrote the ultimate essay on this more than 10 years ago.  “The ‘Swedish model’ posits that paying for sex is a form of male violence against women,” McNeill noted.  “This is why only the act of payment is de jure prohibited: the woman is legally defined as being unable to give valid consent, just as an adolescent girl is in the crime of statutory rape.  The man is thus defined as morally superior to the woman; he is criminally culpable for his decisions, but she is not.  In one case, a 17-year-old boy (a legal minor in Sweden) was convicted under the law, thus establishing that in the area of sex, adult women are less competent than male children”…

An Avalanche of Bullshit (#1390)

I’ll believe this when and if it’s ever proven:

[Spooks] are [now claiming] that six high end brothels in the suburbs of Boston and Washington, D.C. were set up by a foreign nation as an espionage “honeytrap”…[which] targeted politicians, high ranking government officials and defense contractors…RussiaChina, Korea itself, or even Israel are al[l claimed] as possibly being behind the scheme..[one spook belched out “]false flag[” while making furtive movements in his pants.  A puritanical]…U.S. Attorney [vomited out drivel about] “accountability for the buyers“…[and another clown burbled about “]involvement in prostitution[” in order to make a very ordinary business sound scary so as to justify the huge expenditure of “investigating” people for having consensual sex]…

Torture Chamber (#1394)

Your “leaders” call this “correction”:

A California County is facing legal action after a 21-year-old woman committed suicide while [locked] in [the county’s cages]…Alicia Upton was arrested on April 19, 2022 [during a]…mental health [crisis]…yet despite her clear mental health distress…[she was locked] in…a…cell without safety features….and…on April 28…[she] hanged herself…using the sheets from her bed…18 people died while [locked in cages by] Riverside County…in 2022…and [a similar number in] 2023…[the] county…[also lies when] reporting deaths [by] labeling [legally innocent people] who die…[in its cages] as…”‘sentenced’ post-conviction prisoners” in reports to the Justice Department…

The Cop Myth (#1400)

Another cop murders his family; another “news” outfit buries the lede:

[A New York cop named]…Watson Morgan…[murdered his wife] Ornela…[and his] two sons ages 10 and 12…before turning the gun on himself…neighbors are having difficulty [understanding the concept of]…”a very loving father”…[cops] say the public is not in danger [from the deranged cop coming back from the dead to murder others, and absurdly barfed out the typical lie that a cop committing fatal domestic violence is]…an isolated incident…

Diary #706

This is a brick of compressed peat; one of my readers sent me a big package of them for my stove.  I burned a couple of them on Little Christmas while taking down the tree; Grace was nearby fixing the log-splitter, because the bearings seize up from our damp weather when it hasn’t been used in a while.  Learning how to get the most heat out of our stove has been a process; I’ve only ever had a conventional fireplace, and while Grace has had a wood stove before, this design is different from older models to make it legal to sell in Washington state.  It’s supposed to have something to do with air quality, but it makes the thing harder to get going and slower to heat up.  If I had a lot of well-seasoned firewood it wouldn’t be as bad, but I dropped the ball on collecting that during the summer, so now everything I bring in is a bit damp.  It doesn’t seem to matter much once the fire is going good and hot, but getting to that point is a process; hence getting the log-splitter in shape again, and using fuels that burn hotter (like peat) to get the stove up to proper operating temperature.  Grace has designed a press to make articial firelogs out of scrap cardboard (which we always have plenty of), but that won’t be built for a while yet so those will be helpful next winter, but not now (ditto lots of wood I plan to start bringing into the garage in the spring).  So as of right now, the stove does help warm the atrium, but I think next winter it’ll be much better.

If Men Were Angels

This will continue until fools stop teaching children unquestioning obedience to “authority”:

A [typical and representative Alaska] church leader [named Dwight “Chris” John] was sentenced to 20 years in prison with 30 more suspended [for repeatedly molesting a now-teenage girl, starting when she was] nine…

To Molest and Rape

Rapist cops often specifically target vulnerable women:

Deangelo Reyes, [a typical and representative] Tulsa [cop]…charged with [vaginal and oral] rape [of  a disabled woman, is apparently on the run.  He] was scheduled to appear in court [last] Tuesday, but failed to show up…[Reyes was previously] charge[d for raping a different woman]…court for [that crime is scheduled for] March…the new victim…suffer[s] from major neuro cognitive disorder…[due] to severe traumatic brain injury…from a car accident…she [is now]…functioning at a 5th to 6th grade level…

No Escape (#1008)

Your “leaders” refer to this as “correction”:

A…woman [locked in a cage by the state of Oregon has filed]…a federal lawsuit [because] she faces an ongoing barrage of abuse and retaliation after a [screw]…repeatedly sexually assaulted her [with the prison’s tacit permission]…Levi Gray…was charged in August …[but claims she wanted it] and…[was rewarded with a paid vacation until at least] May…A 229-page state report released in August found the prison has a retaliatory culture that discourages the reporting [of] sexual abuse and other wrongdoing…Gray [repeatedly raped] the woman for…a two-month period in April and May while she was in…solitary confinement…with no camera…[besides the rapes] Gray repeatedly…[threw] her against a wall and grop[ed] her while she was handcuffed, [and] chok[ed] her while kissing her and hitting her…[he also put her on a] leash attached to her handcuffs and…oral[ly raped her].  The abuse lasted 40 minutes or longer, sometimes two or more times each day…

Surplus Women (#1196)

37 years after the rape/murder and 81/2 after he was caught:

A Spokane County judge found a [typical and representative] Pasco [Washington cop named Richard Aguirre] guilty…[for the] first-degree murder [of a sex worker named] Ruby Doss…in 1986.  For decades, investigators could not find a suspect in her death.  That was until 2015, when a forensic scientist matched DNA on a condom found near Doss’ body to…Aguirre…[whose] DNA…[had been] collect[ed after he]…rape[d another woman]…Aguirre [escaped consequences for that rape and for Doss’ death until now due to botched prosecutions, mistrials, and jurors afraid to convict a cop]…

To Molest and Rape (#1400)

Cop and preacher is like a huge, wildly-waving red flag:

[Boston-area cop] James Feeley has been arrested and charged with raping a child…[he] pleaded not guilty…[even though he had already] confessed to Winthrop [Massachusetts] Police Chief Terrance Delahanty…on…Christmas Day…Feeley…is also a church leader in Winthrop…

In the News (#1402)

Banning books contradicts the very essence of what our country stands for.  –  Alexi Giannoulias

Gingerbread House

Now that the hysteria is dying, bureaucrats are finally making a long-overdue effort to control rescue industry profiteering:

…the Department of Children and Families will [finally] start putting together rules for [gingerbread]…houses across Florida…[after investigative] reporting…exposed the lack of standards or regulations for those [facilities which]…exploit…[women forced into them by the state using the pretext of “sex trafficking” hysteria]…

Torture Chamber

This will continue until journalists stop obediently referring to senseless violence as “correction”:

Victor Russo…died…from an inoperable brain bleed caused by blunt force injuries to his head.  The prison [li]ed Russo’s fatal injury was sustained in a fall [which coincidentally happened a week after a] prolonged beating by [Alabama screw] Mohammad Jenkins that was caught on a…surveillance camera…The [state’s pet] medical examiner [wagged his tail] and [obediently] classified Russo’s death as an accident.  So Jenkins was charged with [mere] assault, not [wanton] murder…Jenkins…is…a…[typical and representative screw] in an out-of-control prison system, who preyed on incarcerated men, using violence and cruelty with abandon…for 20 plus years, [Alabama Department of Torturing Caged Humans] promoted…Jenkins through the ranks, while he left behind a long…trail of [victims and was]…quietly reward[ed for] it…whi[le]…the federal government [did nothing]…

An Example To the West (#916)

the Lady Mermaid Empowerment Centre…is an organisation led by [Ugandan] sex workers fighting to decriminalise their profession while documenting violations [by police] and providing free contraceptives and counselling.  It works with 25,000 women annually, spread across 122 hot spots – street corners, bars, brothels and lodges – in Kampala and two other districts…

Creepy Coppers

Seems like a significant fraction of child porn is spread by cops:

a [South Carolina cop named]…Daniel Shealy [was fired after he was caught]…distribut[ing]…child pornography over the internet.  [His bosses were much more concerned with his magic clown costume than with the crimes he committed] …

Thought Control (#1250)

It’s sad the the First Amendment has been so weakened it needs a state law to give it teeth:

As libraries across the country face threats and book bans, Illinois [has] become the first state in the nation to ban the practice…House Bill 2789…prevents public schools and community libraries that ban books from accessing state funding…Under the new law, Illinois public libraries must adopt the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights to receive any state funding — which includes “materials should not be excluded because of the origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation”…

The Mob Rules (#1368)

Pornhub has repeatedly chosen not to spy on its users:

Pornhub…has blocked people in Montana from viewing the site [without a VPN in response to]…a new state law that requires websites to verify the age of a person before they can access the site’s content…Pornhub said they were specifically making the decision to block access at this time due to the government ID age verification requirement. Saying…“giving your ID card every time you want to visit an adult platform is not the most effective solution for protecting our users, and in fact, will put children and your privacy at risk”…

Permanent Record (#1387)

It’s unusual to see a man targeted thus, and even more unusual for it to involve university-level teachers:

UW-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow, who was denied a pay raise five years ago over inviting a former porn actress to speak on campus, has been fired for himself engaging in explicit sexual acts with his wife on popular porn websites.  Gow…was already planning to retire at the end of the school year.  But in a three-hour, closed-door meeting…the Board of Regents unanimously decided to terminate his chancellorship and [move to strip him of tenure in an effort to cheat him of his pension even though he did not]…violate…any specific UW system policies…
