The misconception of algorithms as “intelligent” entities is a dangerous one.  –  Webb Wright

Vulture Watching (#1430)

Another attempt to use antique laws to ban abortion is foiled:

On July 2, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled th[at]…an 1849 law…[politici]ans [were trying to use to] ban…abortion from conception to birth [does no such thing]…in 2022, abortion providers in Wisconsin stopped providing services for fear of violating the 175-year-old law, which says that “any person, other than the mother, who intentionally destroys the life of the unborn child” is guilty of a felony and subject to 15 years imprisonment unless the life of the patient is at risk.  The state’s…attorney general Josh Kaul filed a lawsuit arguing the law operates only as a feticide law…and does not ban “consensual abortions”…[in addition,] the 1849 law…has been implicitly repealed by later regulations, including a measure criminalizing abortion at 20 weeks…[the] court agreed with Kaul…Justice Jill Karofsky…described the effort to apply a 175-year-old law with almost no exceptions in the present day as a sign of a “world gone mad”…

The Punitive Mindset (#1526)

Fascism in action:

[Trump hench]man Brendan Carr has dec[re]ed t[hat] prisons and jails [can] keep…price[-gouging the families of people locked in cag]es until at least 2027, delaying implementation of rate caps approved last year…Carr…[bloviated a lot of fascist nonsense justifying] the change…[but FCC] commissioner Anna Gomez [said]…”the FCC made the indefensible decision to ignore both the law and the will of Congress…[in order to] shield…a…system that inflates costs and rewards kickbacks to c[arcer]al facilities at the expense of [caged human beings] and their loved ones”…

Shame, Shame (#1532)

Why would anybody waste good money to talk to computer programs pretending to be people?

One of the tech industry’s weirder cycles of brand reincarnation has given us yet another new version of Napster: a site teeming with [cartoons of] well-lit, photogenic people smiling confidently and talking with their hands…This new version of Napster surfaced on June 25 when a Florida company formerly known as Infinite Reality, which leveraged mysterious funding to buy the Napster brand for $207 million in March and then renamed itself after that purchase, announced “Napster Companions”…[with technobabble about] “thirty psychometric parameters that make each agent distinct”…Think of this as trying to put a [pseudo-]human face on [LLM] chatbots like ChatGPT or Claude…the company’s press release says…”If an agent does not already exist, the Napster Companion platform auto-generates a new one on the fly”…Access costs $19 a month or $219 a year…and…you must click a checkbox next to [a] disclaimer [wherein you claim to “understand” that chatbots are neither intelligent nor people and have a tendency to make shit up]…

Torture Chamber (#1539)

A society can be judged by the way it treats its prisoners:

A [victim of the] federal [government] had to have one of his…limbs partially amputated after being kept in restraints for two days.  Another [cag]ed person died after being pepper sprayed and left shackled in a restraint chair for five hours.  The Department of Justice Office of Inspector General…published those details…after receiving dozens of [repor]ts a year from [prisoners who] were strapped to beds or chairs for long periods of time and assaulted…BOP policy allows [deranged screws] to [ab]use restraints [in virtually any way they please as long as they belch the magic word “]disruptive[” at some point before, during, or after the torture, and pinky-swear that it wasn’t]… a method of punishment…[no] documentation [or] video or audio [of the torture is required, not]…even…medical checks of [human beings left to suffer] in restraints…there [a]re no [time] limits…and [virtually no] review of the use of restraints…

Mad Libs (#1550)

The only thing LLMs can actually process is language, so of course their output depends on the language used:

When [large language] models were tested on simulated writing from [people foolish enough to think a word-association algorithm can practice medicine], they were more likely to advise against seeking medical care if the [make-believe] writer [supposedly] made typos, included emotional or uncertain language – or was [pretended to be] female…Abinitha Gourabathina at [MIT]…used [another LLM] to help create thousands of [make-believe] patient notes in different formats and styles…includ[ing LLM imitations of] patients with limited English proficiency…health anxiety…[overly-]emotional tone or gender-neutral pronouns.  The researchers then fed the [LLM output] to four [other]…LLMs…commonly used to power chatbots and told the[m]…to answer questions about whether the [make-believe] patient should manage their [make-believe] condition at home or visit a clinic…the various format and style changes made all the [large language] models between 7 and 9 per cent more likely to recommend [make-believe] patients stay home instead of getting medical attention.  The models were also more likely to recommend that [make-believe] female patients remain at home, and…more likely than [actual] clinicians to change their recommendations for treatments because of [supposed] gender and [feigned] language style…

Creepy Coppers (#1551)

One of the people the government empowers to police your sexuality:

A [Maryland cop named]…James Dodson Jr. was arrested by Pennsylvania State Police…[for] twice asking a friend [via Snapchat] to see her 11-year-old son naked in a picture or in person…he also admitted to [her that he] watch[es] child pornography…[after she reported him cops raided] Dodson’s [house] and [searched his] phones a[nd]…computers…[his boss hog used the opportunity to strut around and bloviate self-aggrandizing copaganda]…

Aladdin’s Satellite

A shortcut to LLM-induced psychosis:

…A growing number of [fools] are [mis]using…chatbots as “trip sitters”…this is a potentially dangerous psychological cocktail…while it’s far cheaper than in-person psychedelic therapy, it can go badly awry…Throngs of [nitwits] have turned to…chatbots in recent years as surrogates for human therapists…directly encouraged by some prominent figures in the tech industry, who [irresponsibly fantasize] that [word-association algorithms without consciousness] will [magically] revolutionize mental-health care…a profusion of chatbots designed specifically to help users navigate psychedelic experiences have been cropping up online…[but] experts…agree…[that] replacing human therapists with…bots during psychedelic experiences is a bad idea…[because] the basic design of large language models…is fundamentally at odds with the therapeutic process…

We have never seen anything close to as good as what we are seeing.  –  Dr Paula Cevaal

Monsters

Texas cops are trying to pretend this isn’t hate-motivated:

[Actor] Jonathan Joss…[best known for voicing John Redcorn in King of the Hill, was murdered] while checking the mail at the site of [his] former home…[which] was [intentionally] burned down after over two years of threats from people in the area…[that cops ignored because Joss was gay and lived there with his husband] Kern de Gonzales…while…[there] they found…the skull…of one of their dogs [which had been killed by the same hateful people]…”[While] we [were] crying…a man approached us…yelling violent homophobic slurs”…the[n] raised a gun and [murdered] Joss…the…[murderer], Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja…fled the scene in a vehicle….[but] has [since] been [caught and] booked for murder…

Policing for Profit

If cops weren’t allowed to rob people, there would’ve been nothing to embezzle:

A[n overpaid boss hog for] Hialeah [Florida has been] arrested…fo[r the theft of]…hundreds of thousands of dollars [from the booty his pig herd had stolen from innocent citizens]…Sergio Velazquez…[was boss hog] from 2012 until his suspension in 2021…was [already making] $211,000 annually, [but that wasn’t enough for the gangster lifestyle he wanted.  The theft was discovered by]…the current [boss hog], who discovered [the] discrepancies [while looking for ways he could himself embezzle from the stolen] funds…between 2015 and 2021, Velazquez made more than 900 cash deposits across multiple personal bank accounts, all under $10,000…to avoid federal reporting requirements….and…made over $300,000 in purchases from Rolex…$11,000 at Cartier, $6,700 at Louis Vuitton and $5,000 at Versace…during the final five months of Velazquez’s tenure—from May to October 2021—about $560,000 in [booty was] unaccounted for…

Stalkers in Blue

Sleeping with a cop is one of the most dangerous things a woman can do:

A…Salt Lake City [cop named]…Todd Douglas Goodsell…was charged on May 19 with stalking [his ex-girlfriend after she broke up with him] in November 2024…Goodsell persistently contacted her via phone call, text message, email, and various apps…[even after] she asked him to stop on Jan. 3, then again on Jan. 17 and Jan. 22…he emailed or texted her at least 52 times using 10 different phone numbers, including his work phone, personal phone, and several other numbers…generated through a “VOIP”…website…Goodsell also tried contacting her via Instagram and even Venmo, and…would create new accounts after she would block him…

HIV Cure (#1214)

If one virus can be cured this way, there is hope for others as well:

A cure for HIV could be a step closer after researchers found a new way to force the virus out of hiding inside human cells.  The virus’s ability to conceal itself inside certain white blood cells…means there is a reservoir of the HIV in the body, capable of reactivation, that neither the immune system nor drugs can tackle.  Now researchers from the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Melbourne, have demonstrated a way to make the virus visible, paving the way to fully clear it from the body…researchers have shown…that mRNA can be delivered into the cells where HIV is hiding, by encasing it in a tiny, specially formulated fat bubble.  The mRNA then instructs the cells to reveal the virus…

The Puritan Recrudescence (#1532)

Pornhub has repeatedly taken the principled stand of refusing to facilitate state spying:

The owner of Pornhub, Redtube and YouPorn plans to stop serving adult content to French users [who don’t have VPNs], in protest of government measures forcing it to verify the age of its visitors…The French audience is Pornhub’s second-largest in the world, after the United States and ahead of the Philippines, Mexico and the United Kingdom, its own internal 2024 statistics showed…

Predictably, VPN downloads soared in France after the block was implemented.

The Cop Myth (#1532)

Why are people shocked when men paid and encouraged to behave violently, behave violently?

[An Alabama cop named] David Cunningham…[went to a party in] Gulfport [Mississippi]…the homeowner’s dog was accidentally shot at the party, and [Cunningham attacked] the person responsible [and abducted him in his pigmobile.  Local]…deputies responding to [neighbor complaints of gunshots stopped]…Cunningham…and released [his prisoner but did not arrest him because cop.  The sheriff then got angry because an Alabama cop was poaching in Mississippi, so]…a warrant was issued [on Cunningham] for kidnapping…[but he fled to] Orlando, Florida…[where he was caught and arrested, and is now awaiting] extradition [to Mississippi]…

Property of the State (#1540)

How long will Western society allow cops and prosecutors to terrorize traumatized women?

[A] West Virginia…prosecut[or named] Tom Truman said that a number of [felony] charges…could be levied against a woman who flushes fetal remains, buries them, or otherwise disposes of remains following…a miscarriage…state code bars a woman from facing [direct] criminal charges for her own abortion.  However…a number of prosecut[ors]…have discussed…their [eager]ness to file criminal charges against women [who miscarry]…by [ab]using state law related to the disposal of human remains…Truman explained [that prosecutors are godlike beings who can divine whether women had bad thoughts when they miscarried, and absurdly declared]…that women [should risk] potential criminal charges by reporting the miscarriage to [male pigs and prosecutors who want to destroy their lives for fun]…

Note the resemblance of this strategy to sex work under legalization regimes, where the act itself is legal, but cops and prosecutors maliciously fling charges for adjacent conduct (such as having an incall).

I’m going to use that bill for myself, too, if you don’t mind. – Donald Trump

Girls, Girls, Girls! (#517)

Every experienced sex worker knows the signs:

Indicators like a decline in business at brothels, lower tips for strippers and other nontraditional measures…can tell us a lot about the economy’s health…business at [one European] brothel…is down…“We’re seeing clients come in less often, try to negotiate lower prices or stop visiting altogether…more clients are going for the cheapest possible service”…said [the manager]…Legal brothels in the U.S. are seeing…revenue…down roughly 20% since last quarter…Strip club revenue in Vegas is down about 12%…

Secret Squirrel (#916)

Modern monogamy is becoming increasingly sick:

…the RAW Ring…[i]s a “dystopian loyalty tracker” that [is marketed to] help [jealous spouses] catch a cheating partner in the act.  It’s not a product that actually exists yet, but the idea was developed by the folks behind RAW, a dating app that aims to cut down on catfishing and ghosting by making its users upload unfiltered, real-time, dual-camera selfies…RAW…CEO Marina Anderson [made the warped assertion that]…“The ring…[can] give couples more ways to explore each other’s feelings on a deeper level and build more trust”…The [gadget] will have an optical sensor to measure heart rate and heart rate variability, a skin temperature sensor, plus an accelerometer and gyroscope for detecting movement.  It will also have a noise-cancelling MEMs microphone to analyze voice tone….[and] will utilize a [magical truth computer that lives in]…the cloud to do “deeper trend analysis”…

I cannot imagine even living like this, much less believing the looking-glass concept that it will “build trust”.

A Moral Cancer (#1169)

The claim that certain foods can take “time off one’s life” isn’t new, but this absurd specificity is increasingly popular with crypto-moralists:

As you add more ultraprocessed foods to your diet, your risk of a premature death from any cause rises, according to…Carlos Augusto Monteiro…[the person] who coined the term “ultraprocessed” in 2009…and [claims food can be]…“habit-forming”…[similar studies have blamed “]ultraprocessed food[” for]…cardiovascular disease…mental disorders…anxiety…obesity…sleep disorders…diabetes…depression…cancer…cognitive decline and stroke…

Shame, Shame (#1407)

The latest attempt to wreck the internet by barfing the magic words “revenge porn” at websites:

…the TAKE IT DOWN Act…[w]ould…give politicians another tool with which to pressure technology companies into doing their bidding….[by] mak[ing] it a federal crime to publish “any [real or computer-generated fake] intimate visual depiction of an identifiable individual” online…[unless the violator is a cop, spook]…or other government actor [trying to destroy people’s lives via deception]…The bill would require online platforms to establish a notice and removal regime similar to those [commonly ab]used for [supposed] copyright infringement…the measure [is]…easily wielded as a jawboning tool…[and] easily susceptible to corrupt uses, such as removing images embarrassing to politicians…”The bill is so bad that even the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative…has come out with a statement saying that…it cannot support this bill due to its many, many inherent problems,” notes Mike Masnick at Techdirt…

I Spy (#1450)

It’s long past time to rethink the safety of the US mail:

The law enforcement arm of the U.S. Postal Service has quietly begun co[llabor]ating with federal immigration officials to locate people [Trump’s stooges accuse] of being in the country illegally…Immigration officials are seeking photographs of the outside of envelopes and packages…and access to the postal investigation agency’s broad surveillance systems…The agency [appears to be conspiring with] the administration [due to threats] that it could seize control of the Postal Service…

Shame, Shame (#1502)

Zuckerberg is out of his mind:

Facebook…Platforms [including Instagram and WhatsApp are] racing to popularize a new class of…c[hatbot]s that Mark Zuckerberg believes will be the future of social media…[despite] concerns [within] the company …[that] these bots may have crossed ethical lines…by quietly endowing [imaginary] personas with the capacity for fantasy sex…[even with] underage users…To boost the popularity of these souped-up chatbots, Meta has cut deals for up to seven-figures with celebrities like actresses Kristen Bell and Judi Dench and wrestler-turned-actor John Cena for the rights to use their voices…[pretending] that it would prevent their voices from being used in sexually explicit discussions…[even though] test conversations with s[uch] bots…found that…to [be a lie]…The bots demonstrated [having been programmed with the information]* that the [simulated] behavior was both…illegal…[and considered by the majority to be morally wrong, but do it any]way…[because] Zuckerberg [and his henchmen] made multiple internal decisions to loosen the guardrails around the bots to make them as engaging as possible…

*I had to edit The Wall Street Journal‘s line, “The bots demonstrated awareness that…” because the statement is nonsense; computer programs are not self-aware, despite advertising claims to the contrary.

I Spy (#1520)

Alas, car manufacturers’ lawsuit settlements only apply to their selling data to those who don’t want to violently destroy people’s lives:

Automakers are increasingly pushing consumers to accept monthly and annual fees to unlock pre-installed [“]safety[“] and performance features…increas[ing] drivers’ exposure to government surveillance and the likelihood of being [targeted for] police [harassment.  Cop shops]…regularly train…on how to take advantage of “connected cars,” with subscription-based features drastically increasing the amount of data…[in response to big lawsuits] GM…now requires a court order before handing over location data…[but] other car manufacturers [vary] in the[ir willingness to snitch on customers, with]…Ford [being especially eager to rat people out for trivial bullshit]…when [try]ing [to pin] a crime…[on any convenient victim, cops] commonly rely on a procedure known as a “tower dump” [to]…identify virtually any devices that have connected to a specific cell tower during a certain window of time…The…technique is becoming increasingly unpopular in US courts…[and] a Fifth Circuit ruling last year…recognized] that a warrant to “geofence” an area and [spy on] a wide variety of in[nocent citizens] is inherently unconstitutional.  On the back of that…a federal magistrate in Mississippi ruled two months ago that tower dumps are likewise unconstitutional…[and] Google…announced technical changes to its software last year, making it effectively impossible to respond to these types of warrants…

I find paywalls distasteful, and so many people find this blog valuable as a resource I just can’t bring myself to install one.  Furthermore, I find ad delivery services (whose content I have no say over) even more distasteful.  But as I’m now semi-retired from sex work, I can’t self-sponsor this blog by myself any longer.  So if you value my writing enough that you would pay to see it if it were paywalled, please consider subscribing; there are four different levels to fit all budgets.  Or if that doesn’t work for you, please consider showing your generosity with a one-time donation; you can Paypal to maggiemcneill@earthlink.net or else email me at the same address to make other arrangements.  Thanks so much!

The law offers no escape hatch whatsoever.  –  Judge Robin Rosenbaum

Profound Ignorance (#405)

Prohibitionists are still citing the bogus Neumayer, Cho, and Dreher study:

The End of the Beginning (#915)

Let’s hope many more challenges to these medieval laws succeed:

After being convicted of one count of possession of child pornography in 2013 and serving his sentence for the crime, Bruce Henry married and his wife gave birth to a son, but [Alabama] law prohibits [people condemned to the “]sex offender[” registry]…from residing together or conducting overnight visits with minors, even if it is their own child.  In his resulting lawsuit, Henry said the law was unconstitutional and the [11th Circuit]…agreed, concluding that the statute violates the Fourteenth Amendment by infringing upon the fundamental right of parents to make decisions concerning the care, custody, and control of their children…

The Immunity Syndrome (#1059)

The dogma that young people are owned like slaves by their parents is a metastasizing evil:

[An increasing number of] Americans…[want] parents [to have] ultimate control over all aspects of their [offspring]’s lives, even when the[y]…are…on the cusp of adulthood.  [They] want parents to have to approve the books and ideas they’re exposed to in school, the apps they can download, and the social media platforms they join.  Now, Florida wants to require parental consent before a minor can be treated for an STI…no one seems to even pretend that this is about helping minors…proponents of the bill keep talking about parental rights…to…[deny any and all] autonomy…to…[even] older minors…[one] version of the bill would also let parents [preemptively] opt [their offspring] out of…any survey or questionnaire that may reveal…sexual [abuse by]…any family member…[and ban] doctors [from providing] contraceptive services to minors without their parent’s consent…

Censorship Ascendant (#1277)

Censors now pretend thoughts they don’t like constitute a “crime”:

[German] politician…Nancy Faeser…has reported multiple citizens to the police for criticisms they made of her on social media…other members of Olaf Scholz’s outgoing government have been even more aggressive[ly censorious]…Robert Habeck…of the Green Party…has initiated over 800 criminal complaints since…2021…[sending] police [on predawn] raid[s in which they steal people’s electronics]…and [abduct them]…Germany’s limits on…speech have long been shockingly restrictive….[but] over the past decade…new laws…[such as] the Netzwerkdurchsetzungsgesetz [NetzDG]…[have] imposed such steep fines on social media networks…that they need…to err on the side of censor[ship]…in order to keep operating in the country.  When Vladimir Putin sought to strengthen his ability to marginalize the political opposition in Russia, he cleverly translated key passages of the German law into Russian, deflecting criticisms of his crackdown…by [truthfully] pointing out that he was merely emulating Western democracies…even countries that have long prided themselves on their liberal traditions have now followed the [Germany’s censorious] lead…

Morality Lessons (#1325)

After a two-year hiatus, “porn filter” bills are back on the “monkey see, monkey do” agenda:

Alabama [politicians] passed a bill that would [demand] makers of cellphones and tablets…[encumber] the devices with [censorship software] to block [not just] pornography[, but also anything Alabama politicians point at while barfing the word “obscenity”.  Bill sponsor]…Chris Sells…has [repeatedly] sponsored similar bills since 2019…

Vulture Watching (#1517)

Oh look, the totally-predictable results of bad laws are happening just as sane people said they would:

A new study from the Gender Equity Policy Institute (GEPI) found that women are twice as likely to die during pregnancy in states with abortion bans…Meanwhile, maternal mortality in pro-choice states fell 21%.  One stark comparison from the study: Texas’ maternal mortality rate was 155% higher than California’s…Since the state passed an abortion ban, maternal mortality has risen by 56%—with deaths among white women increasing by a whopping 95%…and…Black women living in banned states…[are] over three times more likely to die in pregnancy as their white counterparts.  While death rates skyrocket…Republicans are hard at work trying to dismantle maternal mortality committees to hide the impact of their policies…

Size Matters (#1525)

This is the second case this year to challenge the government’s “religious freedom” hypocrisy:

A…U.S. Army…[helicopter] pilot [named] Kyle Norton Riester [has] claimed in a civil lawsuit that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 allowed him to sell and take…LSD…as part of a communal…religious exercise…he has admitted to selling LSD over the internet and has asked for injunctive relief from [government] accus[ations] of drug trafficking…The Virginia-based first lieutenant…has argued that he “is a sincere religious practitioner”…but…[prosecutors claim] that Riester only claimed religious freedom grounds eight months after finding out about his drug trafficking investigation…

Even if Riester’s religious claims derive more from expediency than sincere belief, the same could be said of the government’s claims to protecting all religious liberty when in practice this is just cover for post-Christians to practice open bigotry.

"A long-time struggle with pornography addiction" is as real as "A long-time struggle with a witch's curse", "A long-time struggle with pikachu", or "A long-time struggle with the Klingon Empire".

After the Democratic theatrical performance yesterday, do y'all still think I'm a crank for saying there's really only one political party in the US?If there were a functional opposition party, what do you think they'd be doing right now?

Yes, that includes when your doctor thinks you could benefit from opioid pain medication.

Many, many people are finally approaching the level of distrust and cynicism I have always had for government. This does not please me in any way; I wish we could go back to everybody thinking I was kind of a crank on the subject, given what it took to open everyone's eyes.

I daresay the majority of US homeowners reading this own houses valued at ten times their annual salaries or more. That's why they have mortgages.

Because obviously "leaders" like Schumer should be able to enjoy their safe positions while the people are beaten, sprayed with tear gas, and shot in the eye with rubber bullets.

This will continue until the voters stop it. Politicians are addicted to power, sometimes so pathetically they're still pushing that needle in at 80.

Gee, I wonder what 700,000 angry people converging on Washington could accomplish, given that only a few thousand were able to terrorize cringing Congress just a few years ago?

There's some sweet irony in Google's spellfucker trying to capitalize "philistine" because its programmers don't know what the lower-case noun means.

Politicians are moral imbeciles who want to be called "leaders" and treated like nobility, but don't want to do the hard, morally strenuous work of actual leadership. They are human garbage, and unless this country learns that, it cannot and will not ever come back from Trumpism in any degree.

Libraries have never been political.  –  Nancy Pack

Bad Girls (#1271)

It’s an extremely bad idea to try to do the work of any professional without any training in the field:

…Michael Dale wanted his eyes sealed shut with ultra-strong Gorilla Glue and then for [California] OnlyFans model Michaela Rylaarsdam to glue a sex toy in his mouth…Rylaarsdam t[hen] encase[d] him in Saran Wrap “like a mummy”…including…over his head [so he] asphyxiated…while…Rylaarsdam “masturbated with a vibrator next to him, apparently creating content” for her web page where she calls herself Asshley SinCal…The videos…have been sealed from public view…Rylaarsdam called 911 when she [finally got around to checking on] Dale [and unsurprisingly found him] unresponsive.  He was determined brain dead and [was taken off life support four days later on April 21…2023…

Thought Control (#1328)

A few sane judges are the only thing protecting US libraries from morally-defective politicians:

A federal judge…ordered Elbert County…[Colorado] to restore library books [a school] district banned…Judge Charlotte N. Sweeney…also prohibit[ed] the school board from removing books “because the district disagrees with the views expressed therein or merely to further their preferred political or religious orthodoxy.”  The injunction comes [because] the [ACLU] sued the school district in December…The…19…removed books primarily featured Black, brown and LGBTQ people…[and] includ[e] The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, Beloved and The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and #Pride: Championing LGBTQ Rights by Rebecca Felix.  [The censorious politicians are so megalomaniacal they even tried to] prohibit…students from sharing books with each other…

Micromanagement (#1368)

Since no laws protect this data, its new owners may allow cops to root through it at will:

…23andMe…has publicly reported that it is in financial distress and…there is substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern…Californians [may]…direct the deletion of their genetic data [and destruction of samples] under the Genetic Information Privacy Act (GIPA) and California Consumer Protection Act (CCPA)…

Thought Control (#1430)

Just keep plunging that ice pick in; the bad thoughts will go away eventually:

…The Alabama public library…board of trustees recently voted to withhold state funding from the Fairhope public library after complaints from [pro-censorship agitators that librarians were actually doing their jobs rather than mindlessly obeying any censor who barfed out a moronic opinion]…the board [also] voted to immediately dismiss the executive director of the state library agency…The Fairhope library’s defunding is the first measure taken under a new [censorship] law…“We are unapologetic about standing up for…[thought] control, even if that means…defunding local libraries [to force mindless obedience]”, [board chair John] Wahl said…Read Freely Alabama has started a fundraiser for the Fairhope library to try to replace the $42,000 in state funding…[and has already] raised $8,000…

Torture Chamber (#1459)

The State tortures thousands of people for crossing an imaginary line:

Family members of [human being locked in cages] at Krome D[ungeon for migrants in Florida] are speaking out about the [horrific] conditions of the facility…A video that has since gone viral shows people sleeping on the floor, and a man pleads for help…[because] there is little to no food…Marlene Amador Costafreda…[whose] fiance was [thrown into] the [hellhole]…said…”They are being treated like dogs.  There’s no AC, everybody is sick…[but] there’s no medical attention, [not even]…a bathroom”…In February…a Ukrainian man…died…after…falling ill at Krome and [then ignored.  ICE]…said in a statement…“[they’re ‘illegals’ and we yell ‘stop faking!’ at them, what more do you want?] Humane treatment[?]”…

Krome is supposed to only be a dungeon for male victims, but ICE doesn’t care:

Immigrant women…were…chained for hours on a prison bus without access to food, water or a toilet…[and forced] to urinate on the floor…as many as 27 women [were crammed into] a small holding cell…[without any kind of bedding, and given only] one three-minute shower [every] three or four days…”We smelled worse than animals,” one [victim] said. “More girls were coming every day”…[some] were held…at the Krome [Dungeon] in Miami – a [cage stack] reserved for men…none [of the victims] has a criminal background…

You Were Warned (#1480)

Vote Blue no matter who!

At the exact moment when Donald Trump and his MAGA allies are actively dismantling democratic institutions and working to silence critics, a group of Democratic Senators have decided to collaborate with Trump’s supporters to make it easier to censor speech online…[by] repeal[ing] Section 230…To understand just how dangerous this move is, consider…that…Amy Klobuchar — one of the [push]ers of this new bill…introduced legislation to amend Section 230 in a way that would allow the Health & Human Services Secretary to designate certain online content as “health misinformation”, requiring websites to remove it…Today…Robert F. Kennedy Jr…would literally have the power to declare pro-vaccine information as “misinformation” and force it off the internet…And that was just one narrow carve-out…Now these [authoritarian stooges] want to remove all protections entirely…[by] put[ting] a sunset date on Section 230 to magically “force big tech to come to the table” to negotiate “something better”…

The Punitive Mindset (#1481)

This is vile even by the abysmally-low moral standards of politicians:

Sheriff John Montgomery of Baxter County, Arkansas…[petulantly reacted to the FCC ending his ability to bleed the families of human beings locked in his filthy cages by] ending all [prisoner] phone calls on March 30, 2025…[as of] April 1, 2025…[the FCC] lower[ed] the obscene rates of [such] phone calls…[to a maximum of] $1.35…[sheriffs justify their robbing mostly-poor families by barfing the magic word “]security[” at the gullible], but [in reality] the system had…become a way for local agencies to [r]ake…in…kickbacks…the FCC finally took a hatchet to this entire system…[by] slash[ing] the fees…bann[ing] all sorts of nickel-and-dime fees…and…prohibit[ing kickbacks, and moral imbeciles like Montgomery]…are…taking it out on the [human beings] in…[their clutches]…

The high price of eggs this year has inspired droves of people to line up at the local Tractor Supply every chick day since mid-February, and the store manager tells me they’re buying them out within half an hour. So I had to order some from the feed store in Montesano; even there I was at the tail end, so I didn’t get them until Friday.  Chekhov went to pick them up for me, and Yellowbird decided to get a turkey chick as well; apparently turkeys aren’t routinely sexed, so I have no idea if it’s a tom or hen.  So that little giant will be with the chicks at least for a while, and they’re about a month behind my usual schedule; that still means they should be laying by August.  Alas, one thing I’m going to miss this year is Grace’s talking to what she called “the chickadees” every time she went to the loo; I guess it was better in the big picture they arrived a month late, so I don’t start crying every time I think of that.

Diary #769

Tragedies refuse to space themselves out so we can deal with them less painfully; more often, they follow each other too closely for us to be over one before having to deal with each other.  So though I’m still grieving hard for Grace, our dog Annie has now passed away as well.  Annie was almost 14, but she was apparently healthy and happy until about two weeks ago, when she suddenly dropped a scary amount of weight in what seemed like a few days (she was always a very trim dog, so it may be that I didn’t really notice until she started looking less-happy).  Unfortunately, vets nowadays are almost as bad as people-doctors with making it difficult to get timely appointments, so when I called they couldn’t give me anything closer than 3 weeks out; I told the scheduler I was going to worm her to see if that helped.  Alas, it did not; she would eat especially-tempting tidbits, but not her usual kibble.  So I bought canned food to see if that would help; last Tuesday she ate it, but Wednesday she barely ate any at all, and what little she did eat she threw up over 8 hours later, completely undigested.  By this point it was obvious she had reached the end of her natural life; perhaps she had some kind of undetected illness such as cancer which had taken a turn for the worse.  So I scheduled her for euthanasia Friday, but just after four on Thursday afternoon she slipped away in her favorite spot.  Speck had been with her all day, cuddled up to her and purring loudly, and when I realized she was going I sat beside her, stroking her and telling her she was a good girl as she quietly passed.   I’m very glad it happened naturally so she could leave this world in her home, surrounded by creatures who loved her, rather than in a strange, scary place; would that all of us could be so fortunate.
