Diary #781

Saturday would’ve been Grace’s 67th birthday, so I’m not especially surprised that I felt quite sad.  Everything seemed off all day; Grace always wanted me to make her favorite dish, Beef Stroganoff, for dinner, with a cheesecake for dessert.  And perhaps in the future, along with burning a candle for her all day, I may prepare those things in her memory; right now the grief is still too intense, so I let Jae cook dinner after she returned from the local “No Kings” protest.  While she was gone, I was here alone and decided to soak in the hot tub with a strong drink, and listen to Queen’s Greatest Hits, which Grace gave me for my birthday in 1999 (if memory serves).  The album includes “You’re My Best Friend”, which as I mentioned last year was my ringtone for her, but it also includes “Who Wants To Live Forever?” which has for almost 40 years always made me cry, even long before my best friend passed from this plane into whatever comes next.  I really am mostly doing better now; I can even get through most days without crying as long as I stay busy (which isn’t hard).  But occasions like this are too painful to manage without grief, and I’ve never been any good at holding in the tears when they’re provoked this intensely.

Cops should not be allowed anywhere near legal minors:

Hardy [Arkansas] Police Chief Scott Rose has been arrested and charged with [raping]…a minor [after getting her drunk.  Rose’s attack was reported to]…Sharp County Sheriff Shane Russell…in late March…[but he dismissed it as a “]rumor[” until]…the victim and her family…[reported the rape to] Arkansas State Police…and the FBI…

And they can’t be trusted even when their freedom depends on it:

[Typical and representative Alabama cop] William “BJ” Squires has been arrested for a third time…[for] violating his bond conditions…[by going] to…Biloxi, Mississippi on June 5…[despite being] require[d]…to stay in Alabama.  Squires…is [out on bail after being]…indicted for rape and sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl…In February, police arrested Squires…[for] walking with his child in Westside Park after he was previously told not to return.  The district attorney’s office was trying to revoke his bond…because of that…[but] Judge Michael Windom [let him go because cop]…

Years after a SWAT team in Texas destroyed an innocent woman’s home while [pla]ying [war with] a fugitive, the local government [has been ordered] to pay her $60,000 in damages plus interest…the end…[of] a legal odyssey that saw Vicki Baker…left with…the bill for…damages…[after pigs maliciously] detonated about 30 tear gas grenades inside Baker’s home, blew off the garage entryway with explosives, and careened a BearCat armored vehicle through her backyard fence.  They smashed the windows and drove through her front door…[despite already having been] given…a garage door opener and the code to enter the home…[these theatrics] were [also performed despite the fact that kidnapper] Wesley Little…had…[already] released the [victim] unharmed [and committed]…suicide…

Civil rights advocates often joke that the Third Amendment is the only one that hasn’t been undermined, but I fail to see any important difference between the government forcibly taking people’s homes to quarter troops and forcibly taking them to enable cops and robbers games.

Sacramento County is eyeing a new approach to track and [spy on homeless] people…The county’s probation department [pretends] it [“]needs[“]…drones to [harass] homeless people who are on probation…The drones…will be [equipped with speakers] to [allow cops to oink at] homeless people…[without] exposing themselves to potential risk…and [thereby plan a strategy]…to move in [for pogroms.  Another]….goal is to [expedite] issuing warrants when a homeless person does not show up for their probation check-ins…The Sacramento Homeless Union [obvious]ly opposes the plan…Crystal Sanchez, the union’s president, [said this]…”is just the latest escalation in a disturbing trend – treating people in crisis as if they are criminals to be surveilled…Instead of investing in real housing solutions, the county is doubling down on tactics that traumatize, intimidate and further destabilize those who are already vulnerable”…

To clarify that last editorial insertion: I’ve been saying since the early ’90s that digital computers, by reducing everything to binary, are fundamentally unable to think as we understand the concept, regardless of how big or fast they are or how complex the software, because intelligence requires grasping the concept “maybe”, which is excluded by binary data processing.

If cops weren’t allowed to rob people, there would’ve been nothing to embezzle:

Stalkers in Blue

Sleeping with a cop is one of the most dangerous things a woman can do:

A…Salt Lake City [cop named]…Todd Douglas Goodsell…was charged on May 19 with stalking [his ex-girlfriend after she broke up with him] in November 2024…Goodsell persistently contacted her via phone call, text message, email, and various apps…[even after] she asked him to stop on Jan. 3, then again on Jan. 17 and Jan. 22…he emailed or texted her at least 52 times using 10 different phone numbers, including his work phone, personal phone, and several other numbers…generated through a “VOIP”…website…Goodsell also tried contacting her via Instagram and even Venmo, and…would create new accounts after she would block him…

HIV Cure (#1214)

Pornhub has repeatedly taken the principled stand of refusing to facilitate state spying:

The owner of Pornhub, Redtube and YouPorn plans to stop serving adult content to French users [who don’t have VPNs], in protest of government measures forcing it to verify the age of its visitors…The French audience is Pornhub’s second-largest in the world, after the United States and ahead of the Philippines, Mexico and the United Kingdom, its own internal 2024 statistics showed…

Predictably, VPN downloads soared in France after the block was implemented.

How long will Western society allow cops and prosecutors to terrorize traumatized women?

[A] West Virginia…prosecut[or named] Tom Truman said that a number of [felony] charges…could be levied against a woman who flushes fetal remains, buries them, or otherwise disposes of remains following…a miscarriage…state code bars a woman from facing [direct] criminal charges for her own abortion.  However…a number of prosecut[ors]…have discussed…their [eager]ness to file criminal charges against women [who miscarry]…by [ab]using state law related to the disposal of human remains…Truman explained [that prosecutors are godlike beings who can divine whether women had bad thoughts when they miscarried, and absurdly declared]…that women [should risk] potential criminal charges by reporting the miscarriage to [male pigs and prosecutors who want to destroy their lives for fun]…

Note the resemblance of this strategy to sex work under legalization regimes, where the act itself is legal, but cops and prosecutors maliciously fling charges for adjacent conduct (such as having an incall).
