It’s kinda nice when I can keep things moving along for a change. We’ve got the trim for the bookcases; I’m waiting for the proof of The Essential Maggie McNeill, Volume I; I’ve made my travel arrangements for this weekend; and I’m starting to figure out my schedule for February (about which I’ll say more later). And in addition to all that I managed to read a novel and listen to a rather strange but very entertaining radio serial from 1972 named The Fourth Tower of Inverness, which Chekhov gave me for Christmas (he also gave me the sequel, Moon Over Morocco). Normally it would be difficult for me to sit and listen to such a long series, but I’ve driven to or from Sunset five times since receiving it, and the car has a CD player, so ta-da! If you’ve ever heard the series you’ll understand when I tell you I kinda wish I had listened to at least some of it stoned, but I’ll have a chance with the sequel (which I’m told is not dissimilar). Learning to relax and let go of stuff that stresses me out has been a long, slow, laborious process, but I’m getting there, and it’s lovely when people give me gifts that help.

It’s funny; when I sat down to write this I thought I’d say this week was quiet. But then reflecting back, I realized it actually hadn’t been; I went to a concert with Daedalus and a play with Chekhov, took a bingo-loving friend to the bingo hall for her birthday, attended a small but lovely party at Lady Vi’s on Saturday, then went to Allena Gabosch’s book launch on Sunday. So it wasn’t actually that quiet; it just somehow felt quiet. In my youth, my life was full of adventures; when I became a librarian and settled down with Jack I started to miss that, and the universe responded to that mild nostalgia with my Year of Disaster soon afterward. This is not to say that I no longer like having adventures; I’m just a lot more circumspect about the kind of adventure, and the kind I like are the kind where most of the important factors are firmly under my control (and yes, that’s one of the many reasons I dislike flying). And when things are relatively quiet, I enjoy them for as long as that lasts rather than looking forward to the next excitement.

This was not a good idea. – Jamie Bisceglia
If you’re British and over 40, or an American of that age who loved Captain Kangaroo, you probably remember the adventures of Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings. I recently remembered them and discovered this YouTube channel, and if you’ve never seen them before I think you’ll enjoy them. And if you’re American and remember them too, you may remember that the song was slightly different when they aired here. People are losing their lives, their freedom, their children, their marriages — all because of this one man. – Erika Helms
If you don’t habitually consume cannabis edibles as I do, you may not realize that a lot of factors affect their potency and onset rate, including recently-eaten foods, time of the month (for women) and even the brand of edibles. So even though I use only 10 mg on nights when I just want to relax and sleep, sometimes that 10 mg hits me a lot harder and faster than at other times. And when that happens, I’ve discovered that shows from my childhood can be extremely entertaining. Consider, for example, this extremely weird little song from Sesame Street; try watching it while high and you may see what I’m talking about. I don’t recall where I got the first link above the video, but the others were provided by Franklin Harris, Nattie Roman, Elizabeth N. Brown, Jesse Walker, and Mike Chase, in that order.
